Description

Nov. 19, 1968 c. WEBBER REFUSE CAN COVER AND CRUSHER Filed Aug. 23, 1966 IN V EN TOR. Crdf'y Webber United States Patent 3,411,722 REFUSE CAN COVER AND CRUSHER Craig Webber, Tylersport, Penn. 18971 Filed Aug. 23, 1966, Ser. No. 575,221 5 Claims. (Cl. 241-99) This invention relates to refuse can covers and related equipment, and more particularly a refuse can cover and crusher.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a refuse can cover and crusher which is designed to crush or break the empty cans and bottles before they are deposited into the refuse can.
Another object of this invention is to provide a refuse can cover and crusher wherein the crusher device is directly positioned above the refuse can for dispatching the crushed elements therein.
Another object of this invention is to provide a ref-use can cover and crusher which is designed to be used with any conventional refuse or garbage cans.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a refuse can cover and crusher which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, may be moderately priced, safe to use, and provides maximum utility to the user.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details disclosed but includes all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a vertical view of this invention shown partly broken away;
FIGURE 2 is a vertical edge-wise view of the knife member removed from FIGURE 1.
According to this invention, a refuse can cover and crusher is designed to be used with a conventional refuse or garbage can 11 which is provided with a conventional circular cover 12. The top portion of said cover includes a rectangular opening 13 which is provided with an overlapping rectangular cover 14. An elongated handle 16 is integrally secured to one edge of cover 14. A pivoting pin 15 pivotally affixes one end of handle 16 to the surface portion of a cover 12 and thereby provides means for closing and opening of the rectangular opening 13 by side-wise movements of the handle 16 (see FIGURE 2). A rectangular chamber 17 is superimposed above the rectangular opening 13 and cover 14. Said chamber 17 is secured to the upper surface of the cover 12 at its outwardly extending bracket 17. A crusher plate 18 is adapted to slidingly move within the chamber 17. The bottom portion of said plate is provided with a plurality of downwardly extending metallic teeth which are of sufficient strength to break, crush, or otherwise reduce the original size of a can or a bottle. An upwardly extending support 20 is secured to one side of the rectangular chamber 17 and is pivotally connected with one end of the handlebar 22 which, in turn, urges the verticle movements of stem 21 which directly communicates with the upper projection of the crusher plate 18.
It will also be noted that, in operation, a plurality of cans and/ or bottles may be suitably deposited within the rectangular chamber 17. Handle 22 is then moved into the downward direction thus causing teeth 19 of the crusher plate 18 to break or crush the contents within chamber 17. Afterwards, the outwardly extending handle 16 of the cover plate 14 is moved into a side-wise direction thereby allowing the crushed cans and/ or bottles to freely fall into the refuse or garbage can 11.
While this construction may be considered as a preferred embodiment, it is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention.
What I now claim is:
1. A refuse can cover and crusher comprising, in combination, a refuse can, a circular cover adapted to snugly enclose the top portion of said can, said circular cover being provided with a rectangular opening, a rectangular plate arranged to enclose said opening of said cover, an elongated handle being integrally secured to one side of said plate for opening said rectangular opening within said cover, a rectangular chamber secured on said cover, said chamber being concentric with said plate and said opening of said cover, crushing means moveably positioned within said chamber, a handle communicating with said chamber and said crushing means for lowering said crushing means on the contents within said chamber and means for opening said rectangular opening of said cover for depositing the crushed contents from said chamber into said refuse can.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein a pivoting pin being arranged to pivotally secure said elongated handle with the top portion of said circular cover.
3. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said rectangular chamber being provided with an outwardly extending bracket member for weldingly securing said chamber to the top portion of said cover.
4. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said crushing means include a plate, a plurality of inwardly extending teeth being provided on said plate for crushing the contents within said chamber when said handle is being pressed in a downwardly direction.
5. The combination according to claim 1, wherein an outwardly extending projection is provided on the upper edge of said chamber for operably communicating with one end of said handle, and a vertically positioned stern being flexibly secured to said handle and said crushing means in such a manner that it is adapted to cause movements of said crushing means in accordance with the pivotal travel of said handle.
