NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOISE SHERWIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MEDICINE-SPOON.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,221, dated April 6, 1886.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Emma SHERWIN, of New York, in the county and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medicine-Spoons, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a spoon adapted to be conveniently carried in the pocket or packed up with vials of moderate size and suitable for measuring and administering medicines. To this end I construct my improved spoon with a broad handle of moderate length and with projections in any preferred form under the said handle equal in height to the convexity of the bottom of the bowl, so that the spoon may rest upon a table with the margin of the bowl exactly level, so that it can be completely filled, and may then be lifted from the table for administering the medicine.
My invention is represented in the accompanying drawings under various modifications, in which Figure I is a side view showing the legs beneath the handle. Fig. II is a bottom view of the same. Fig. III is a longitudinal section showing the spoon made with a transverse rib on the under side as a substitute for the legs. Fig. IV is a perspective view of a spoon with longitudinal ribs on the under side of the handle as a substitute for the legs, such ribs being adapted to be made by stamping up. Fig. V is a side "iew of a spoon with the handle thickened at the extremity as a substitute for the legs.
B is the bowl of the spoon and H a marginal flange projecting from one end thereof and forming the handle. This flange or handle is preferably of a width equal to that of the bowl, and is contracted in length, being only sufficiently long to permit of being grasped by the thumb and finger; but these dimensions may be slightly varied without departing from my invention.
The bowl B may be of ordinary form and dimensions, having the capacitytof a teaspoon, for example; but the invention is of course applicable to the larger sizes known, respectively, as dessert spoons and tablespoons.
In Figs. I and II, a a are legs projecting from the under side of the handle H, and
equal in height to the depth of the bowl B, so that when the spoon is resting on the table, as represented, the margin of the bowl will be exactly level.
In Fig. III the same effect is accomplished by means of a transverse rib or flange, b,which I prefer to locate near the base of the bowl, leaving a projecting portion of the handle for more convenient prehension; but, if preferred, the said ridge or rib Z) may be located at the extreme end of the handle, in which case it can be conveniently formed by striking it up in sheet metal by the same operation which forms the bowl of the spoon.
In Fig. IV the spoon is shown with longitudinal ribs 0, taking the place of the legs a.
In Fig. V the invention is shown as embodied in a spoon provided with handle H, of moderate thickness at its connection with the bowl and gradually increasing in thickness to the extremity, where it has a depth or thickness at (Z equal to the depth of the bowl of the spoon, so as to effect the object already explained of causing the spoon to rest on the table with a level margin.
It is apparent that the legs shown in Figs. I and II, or the transverse rib shown in Fig. III, or the longitudinal ribs shown in Fig. IV may be variously located, and may either of them be used with a handle of round form, as shown in full lines in Fig. II, or with a square handle, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. II and in full lines in Fig. III.
I propose to construct the spoon of glass or of tin or other cheap metal for general use; but it may of course be made of costly metal.
I am aware that spoons having handles of the ordinary construction have been provided beneath said handles with removable and hinged legs or supports; but such are not the equivalent of my invention,
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A pocket-spoon struck up from a single piece of metal, with a broad short horizontal flange and a support for the flange, substantially as set forth.
