I NITED STATES PATENT tries.
GUSTAVUS A. W. CAGE, JR, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DUST-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,921, dated September 25, 1888.
Application filed December 29, 1887. Serial No. 259.308. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS A. W. GAGE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to produce a dnstpan that shall be strong and durable, of novel, simple, and inexpensive construction, that will in operation rest upon the floor without being held in place by the hand or foot of the sweeper, and that can be handled and moved about from place to place without stooping. Said dust-pan is constructed as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective front view of my improved dust-pan. Fig. 2 is a perspective rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank of sheet metal used to form the bottom and part of the back of the pan. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of said blank after being folded. Fig. 5 is a plan View ofthe blank used to form the sides and part of the back of the pan, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the handle.
To construct the pan, the blank D, Fig. 3, is first bent or struck up, as shown ats, Fig. 4, to form one side of a socket to receive the handle. Said blank is then bent on the line 1 2, Fig. 3, until the parts A and B thereof are at 4 right angles to each other, as in Fig. 4. The
blank O,Fig. 5,has the body portion 0 notched or cut away at d and e and the wings c 0 cut away at e e, leaving projections ffand narrowing to a point at their extremities. After the blank D has been bent as shown in Fig. 4, the back of the part B thereof is ap plied to and upon the body portion 0 of the blank Gin such manner (the said parts being of the requisite dimensions, respectively) that the upper edge of the part B will rest upon and coincide with the lines 3 4 3 4 of O, and the lower line of the part B will coincide with the lower line of the part 0. Said part B should be soldered along its lower and side edges to the part 0. The upper edges of the part 0 are then bent at the lines 3 43 4 over the upper edge of the part B and soldered thereto. The notch d provides space for the insertion of the handle in the socket s. The wings c c are then bent forward at right angles to the part 0 and their lower edges soldered to the side edges of the part A. Said blanks O and D being bent and secured together in the manner described, two feet, ff, will be formed, upon which the rear corners of the pan will rest, and the bottom A, when the pan is in position for use, will be inclined from the rear to its front edge, and said edge will bein close contact with the floor at the proper angle for use. The part 0 when fitted to the part B, as described, furnishes a back for and completes the socket s, to receive the handle and hold the saniein upright position.
The handle may be of wood, metal, or other suitable material, of such length and form as may be convenient for use, and fitted to and properly secured in the socket S.
I claim as my invention- 7 1. The dust-pan blank D, having the parts A and B,and the blank 0, having the part 0', the wings a c, projections ff, and slot (1, said blanks being adapted to be used in combination to form a dust-pan, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the improved dust-pan constructed of the blank I), having the parts A and B, and the blank 0, having the body part C,the lateral wings c c, and projectionsff, said blanks being bent and secured together and forming the bottom A. the back B, sides 0 c, and feetffisubstantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVUS A. IV. GAGE, J R.
