UNITED STATES PATENT OrFtcE.
ARTHUR W. COX, OF BALLARD VALE, IVIASSAOHUSETTS.
TABLE-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356. dated n y 1887- Application filed May 22, 1886. Serial No. 202,952. (Modehl To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ballard Vale, in the county of Essex and State of 5 Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Knives; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to table-knives; and it consists in the novel features more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed, and shown in. the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure l is a side view in elevation. Fig. 2 is a top edge view of the same resting on its side upon a support, and Fig. 3 is a bottom edge view in a similar position.
The blade A may be of any desired shape,
and is preferably one with the handle B, which.
has the upper edge formed on a curve and the lower edge on a series of curves, 1) I). The upper edge, near the heel of the blade, is expanded laterally on each side thereof, forming rests for keeping the blade clear of the table-linen. It also curves upward, forming the point a, which serves as a stop for the thumb or forefinger to rest against, to facilitate the manipulation of the knife. The expanded edge slopes rearwardly and downwardly toward the end and lower-edge, re-
spectively, being greatest at or near the heel of the blade, to form a rest and afford a purchase for the finger or thumb when using the knife.
The lower edge is serrated or provided with a series of notches, formed by the curves b b, for the reception of the fingers of the hand, thereby permitting a firmer grip, besides presenting an ornamental and pleasing appearance. The end of the handle, diagonally opposite the rest If, is prolonged, forming the point B, which holds the edge of the blade from the linen and prevents the knife tilting laterally on the rest N, which it would otherwise do if it were not for this point, owing to the rest being at the upper edge of the handle.
A By prolonging and curving the lower rear corner of the end of the handle to one side the greater mass or bulk of the handle is thrown to the right, or above a line passing through the rest 12 and the point B; hence the longitudinal and lateral tilting motion about the rest I) is counteracted by the point B and the resultant converted into a diagonal tilting movement, which is represented by the dotted line, Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the blade,of a handle having'the upper edge, near the heel of the blade, upwardly curved and laterally expanded beyond the sides,.as shown, forming a rest for the knife and a rest and stop for the finger, and having the lower rear corner diagonally opposite the rest prolonged, forming the point B,which acts in opposition to the rest and holds the edge of the blade off the linen,'substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein shown and described knife, consisting of the blade and handle made in one piece, having the-upper edge of the handle, near the heel of the blade, expanded laterally beyond the sides of said handle and curved upward to form a knife and finger rest, and the remaining portion of said edge curved to the end, and the lower edge provided with a series of serrations, the last of the series intersecting with the curved upper edge, forming the point B, which acts in opposition to the expanded upper edge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR W. COX.
