Filed Dec. 27, 1965, Ser. No. 517,197 2 (Zlairns. (Cl. 49-383) This invention relates to a door with sealing means.
One object of our invention is to provide improved sealing means between an inner side extremity of a door and the door jamb to thereby close or seal the space between the two.
Another object is to provide effective sealing means that is not carried by the door yet keeps the space sealed between the door jamb and door.
Still another object is to provide novel sealing means carried by the door whereby the said space is kept sealed normally and as the door is opened and closed.
A further object is to provide such sealing means in the form of a loop that contacts the door jamb, thus providing a flexible sealer of double thickness having a sturdy appearance.
A still further object is to provide such sealing means that is simple to install, is durable, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, we are not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawing nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but are entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of our claims.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a door embodying our invention.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged, sectional view taken on the line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a greatly enlarged, fragmentary, front elevational view of the upper left corner of the door shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged, sectional view taken on the line 44 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a front elevational view showing the mounting means connecting the door to the door jamb at the upper left corner.
As illustrated, my door has a main body having at an inner side a wood block or stile 12. As shown, said body includes a pair of rubber covers 14 and 16 at the rear face and a pair of rubber covers 14a and 16a at the front face. Between said pairs of covers is a filler of rubberized hair 18 or any suitable material.
Said door has a support for said body 10 shown as a rotatable post 20 which provides part of the mounting means by which said body 10 moves between closed and open position. This post 20 is set in a bearing 21 attached by a bolt 21a to a door jamb 30, later described. Said post 20 is connected to said body 10 by two metal attaching portions 22 and 22a that are fastened to said stile 12 by screws 24 which also pass through said covers.
3,384,995 Patented May 28, 1968 Well known cam mounting means 25 extends above the top of said two pairs of covers and includes a bearing 26 held by bolts 28 to a door jamb or frame 30 and that has a cam member 32.
A roller holder 33 supports a roller 34 that runs on the surface of said cam member 32, being rotatably held by a pin 38 to a support or yoke 36. A pin 40 fixedly holds said cam holder 33 to said post 20, thus rotatably moving the post and holder together. This causes said cam roller 34- to travel on the surface of said cam portion 32 as the door opens and closes and also respectively raises and lowers the latter.
Between said mounting means 25 and said door jamb 30 there is a space 42 which will permit air to pass through. To close this space at all times, we provide sealing member 44 overlapping a portion of said body 10 and shown as a flexible flap normally in contact with said body 10. This member has an angular attaching portion 46 that extends into a U-shaped holder 48 and is there held by screws 50 that extend through said holder 48, said attaching portion 46 and into said door jamb 30. This sealing member 44 may be made of neoprene or other durable and flexible material.
Below said mounting means 25 and sealing member 44 is another closure or air sealing member 54, that may be made of flexible material such as Hypalon. It extends mostly around said post 20, and through a space between said attaching portions 22 and 22a. Beyond the latter it is so formed as to provide a closure loop 56 that contacts said jamb 30 thus providing an air seal extending downwardly from said air sealing member 44. Thus the space between said jamb 30 and said door opposite said loop 56 is always sealed or closed, whether the door is moving or still.
Said sealing member 54 is fastened by a pin member shown as a rivet 58 extending through attaching portions 22 and 22a, sealing member 54 and post 20, being headed over as at 60.
What we claim is:
1. A door in combination with a door jamb, said door embodying mounting means movably mounting said door to said jamb, said jamb being spaced from the inner side edge of said door, and a flexible sealing member attached to said jamb and normally in contact with a portion of said door, said sealing member extending only partly the height of said door, and another sealing member attached to said door and extending in the form of a loop to and into contact with said jamb and extending from a point adjacent said first sealing member in a direction away from the latter.
2. A door in combination with a door jamb as set forth in claim 1, said mounting means embodying a post extending vertically, said other sealing member extending partly around said post, and means holding said other sealing member to said post.
