FRANKLIN BENNETT, OF MARSHALLVILLE, OHI, ASSIGNOR F ONE-THIRD TO LEMMAN S. ZIMMERMAN, 'UF SAiiiE PLACE.
RELMNQHN SPECFICATION forming part of Lettera Patent No. SElQl, lated March '16, 1386.
Application filed November l2, 1884. Serial No. 147,613?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that FRANKLIN BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mar shallville, in the county of iVayue and State 0i' Ohio, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Hand-Drill Presses, oi which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to that class ol' hand-drill presses havi ng a head-bloei: through. which the drill-stock and feedingscrew pass,` and two hooks depending therefrom to hold the article to be drilled.
The object of my invention is to render suoli presses adjustable to different forms and. positions of work, and to hold the drill rigidly in line While working. A
My invention consists in the devices illus trated liu the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is au elevation ol' my improved handdrill press, the left halt' being shown in central vertical section; Fig. 2, crossscction of the head-block at the linceul'.
Pigs. 3 and -t represent` respectively, end and side elevations of the footpieces.
The hendblock A has a vertical slot ruir ning,` lengthwise ol' it, on each side of which are channels c u. A nut, l, is carefully fitted to slide in the threaded lo receive the ieeding-screw G. This screw, driven by the hand-wheelD, is hollow, and contains the drill-shaft ll, which is operA By this arrangement ated by the ratchet F.
is maintained at right angles to the the drill headblock A, but can bemoved toward either end to adapt it to the position of the work. The hooks (l i are linked at their upper ends into rings It on the ends ot' the headed rods which pass through and turn in the block A. The linlcioint may, however'. be omitted, ii' desired, and the hooks pass directly through the head-block. ly this construction the Ahooks can he turned in any direction that the work may require.
To adapt the hooks to face and constitute the at a right angle with the drill, I provide the footpicces l I. These each consist of an independent plate having a plain upper face,
present a dat upper foundation for a table a vertical slot and channels, and is scrcwi (No model.)
and on the under face two parallel flanges, the o distance between them being` equal to the width oi' the hoolt, between which tlanges is an inclined surface having the saine angle as the, hook. in use one ot' these plates is placed on each hook, the latterentering the space between the flanges and .resting on the inclined surface' between them, the upper face of the plate being parallel with the lower l'ace of the headblocli A., thereby adoi'ding two planesur'aces upon which to place any article to be drilled.
l ain aware that a head provided with rigid pendent hooks and having parallel ways and a nut fitted to slide in said ways and bearing a feedingscrew, between which and the artiele held by the hooks a ratchet-drill may be placed, is not new, and this I do not claire'. The objection to this arrangement is, that as the drill simply rests against the lower end of the feeding-screw, it has nothing` to hold it in line or prevent it 'roni deviating from the line 73 ol' the screw.
he advantage oi' my device is, that the ieeding-scrcw itselt' ati'ords a guide for the drill-shalt.
l claim- 1. The combination, with a head-block provided with hinged pendent hooks and having parallel ways and a nut fitting in said ways y and arranged to slide therein, oi' a hollow feeding-screw fitting said nut, provided with admini-wheel and inclosinga drill shaft provided with driving mechanism, substantially as shown, and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The coinhinatio1i,\vith ahook connected 85 with the head-block of a handdrill press, of a plate, l, having two ilanges,i i', with intermediate formation arranged to lit on said hook, substantially as shown, and foi-'the purpose speeiiied.
lu testimony that l claim lthe foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day oiv September, A. D. 188i.
FRANKMN BENNETT. Witnesses;
C. l?. HUMPHREY, Duron' Dome.
