Description

UNITED STATES ATENT Fries..-
BURNAM n. ,cnARK, or UNioNcRovn, WISCONSIN.
vlsE. 'A
SPECIFICATION forming part afnemers Patent No. 378,082, dated February 21, less.
Application filed May 2, 1887. Serial No. 236.785. (No model.)
' claimed, consists in the form, construction,
and combination of the various parts of the device hereinafter described.-
In the drawings, Figure l is avertical crosssection of a part of a carpenters bench with my improved device in connection therewith.
, Fig. 2 is an inner view of my device separated from the bench and as seen at right angles to the View in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of parts of my device. Fig. 4 is a detail.
In the drawings, A is the leg of a carpenters bench.
B isa board forming the side of the bench, and B is a board forming the top of the bench, and B is a cross beam or support.
A bracket or plate, C, is affixed to the inside of the leg A by bolts S S. Integral with the plate C is an inwardly-projecting sleeve, D. An aperture through the plate C, continuing lengthwise through the sleeve D, is adapted to receive and carry horizontally thc traveling arm E. This traveling arm E, for greater strength and adaptability for carrying its end load in a true line, is ,preferably constructed with, a dat upper part, E', oblong,- horizontally crosswise, with a centrally-downwardprojecting rib, E", longitudinally. At its outer end this traveling arm E is provided with a plate, F, either integral therewith or rigidly affixed thereto, which plate F extends at right angles to the arm E, and is mostly above the arm. This plate F is provided on its upwardly-.extending edges with outwardly'- projecting iianges F F.
The plate C, sleeve D, arm E, and plate F are preferably constructed of malleable iron. A wooden jaw, G, provided with recesses G', adapted to receive snugly therein the flanges F F', is secured rigidly by bolts H H to the plate This jaw G terminates at its upper extremity in a curved vrounded outer'edge, I, l
for convenience and adaptability for use.
The jaw G forms one sidefof the vise, the board B of the bench forming the other or opposing jaw or'resisting support. Thetop of the jaw G is located at-the same height as the to'p of the bench, and the inner face ofthe jaw G is opposite to the board B.
The material held by this device for woodworkers work is held between the upper end of thejaw G and the board B; and for woodworkers use, on account of the possibilityand even liability of his sharp tools coming in contact with the upper end of this jaw, it is considered necessary to have the upperend of the jaw of the vise constructed of wood. It is with reference to this supposed absolute requirement in the construction of wood-work' nut, L, secured in the plateC. An iron col-v lar, 'M, rests against yand is secured to the outer surface of the jaw G,- about the aperture through which the screw K passes. The aperture through the collar M is onlylarge enough to allow the tang of the screw to pass through it, and the end of the screwproper bears against the collar M on its inside, while the cross-head N,in which the tang of the screw is received and held rigidly, bears against the collar on the outside, whereby the screw is held against any endwise movement in the jaw G, while rotating freely therein, and whereby, as the screw travels forward and back in the leg A, the jaw G is carried forward and back with` the screw. At its outer end the screw K is provided with alever or crank-arm, O. The nut L enters an aperture therefor in the plate C, and is retained in position byy a shoulder, P,
on `its outer perimeter, which bears against the' IOO outer surface of the plate C, and bya feather,
Q, integral therewith, which enters a recess therefor in the plate C, the shoulder P being adapted to prohibit the nut from entering farther into the plate C, and the feather Qbeing adapted to prohibit the nut from rotating in the plate.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent, is-` 1. In a wood -workers vise, the woodenfaced jaw G, aixcd to the plate F, and the traveling arm E, rigidly affixed to the plate F, in combination with a bench provided with a plate, C, in which the arm E is adapted to travel, and the screw K, adapted to move the jaw .G toward and from the bench, substantially as described.
2. In a wood-Workers vise, the woodenfaced jaw G, with recesses G G", in combination with the plate F, provided with flanges F F, adapted to enter recesses G G', andthe traveling arm E, rigidly aixed to the plate F, al1 substantially as described.
3. In a wood-workers vise, a bench provided with a leg, A, the thereto rigidly-attached plate C, provided with sleeve D, in com- .bination with the traveling arm E, secured to d the jaw G, a jaw, G, and a screw, K, adapted for moving the jaw @substantially as described.
In testimony Whereof I aix my signature in 3o presence of two Witnesses.
