UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE, i
'LOUTS BELAND, NORTH SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FOR HOLDING RATCHET-DRILLS FOR DRILLING RAILROAD-RAILS.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,225, dated January 16, 1877; application filed November 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS BELAND, of North Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Drilling-Clamp, of which the following is a specification Figure l is an end view. Fig. 2 is a plan View, and Fig. 3 is a front view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to improved apparatus for holding and feeding ratchet-drills employed in drilling fish-plates while in place on the rails; and it consists (f a clamp formed of two parallelbars of iron or steel, forming ways for a sliding nut, through which the clamping or feeding screw passes. The said bars are connected at each end with books of peculiar form, which are capable of engaging with the lower side of the rail.
Referring to the drawing, A A are bars of iron or steel, which are bolted at each end to hooks B, and are separated by blocking or by bending the ends of thebars so as to be capable of receivingthe nut O, which is flanged on each side, so that it may retain its place between the bars. It is threaded to receive the screw D, which is provided with the ordinary lever-handle or. hand-wheel, and is countersunk in its smaller or inner end to receive the pointed end of a ratchet-drill stock.
The hooks B are bent so that they engage I the flange at the lower side of the rail, and
in the end of the screw D, and placing the drill in the center-mark of the hole to be made, and feeding up the drill by means of the clamp-screw D.
As the hooks (when the clamp isused) are attached so that they pass under the rails, the apparatus is not in the way of passing trains, and need not be removed until the required number of holes are drilled.
The nut carrying the feeding-screw is capable of being adjusted to any number of holes within the limit of the length of the parallel bars.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A drilling-clamp, consisting of the bars A and hooks B, bolted together and combined with the flanged movable nut O and screw D, as shown and described.
LOUIS BELAND.
