Patented Sept. 18, 1951 2,565,683: nnenoovme- Too-c Ernest]; .Mayher;; Kiwanis Lake; 011110; assgm to Thev Tremont :Tool and-Gage: Conipaiiyylncaa Cleveland, Ohio, aflcorpora'tion of Ohio: Nppl icatiori Augustzs, 194s; -sens1;Na. 4s;oi-s
ici'aim. (01; 77-2) Thlsvinvention relates tower-grooving: tools and more particularly to 'aitool fors grooving or regrooving the annu ar 'walls o'f'a-cylinder, such as anautomotive-distrlbiitdrbody:
It is anobject of the' present invention to provide-a toolof the above named character. which is of simple and sturdy construction and which in use will accurately gro'oveorre groove a cylinder' due to the provision of meansfor adjusting and .1 rigidly m'aintaini-ng tl-ie cutters in adjusted position in the tool:
A further object of this? invention resides 'in a grooving or 're g-roovin g tool"having a plurality of grooving cutters radially disposed -in the tool and normallyurged toai retracted position inwardly thereof; and-means foi feeding' -said cutters sin'iultaneously ra dially 'outwardly of the tool.
Another object 'oftheiriyention is the provision of a tool of this'icharacter which can be quickly appliedto a 'cyli-nder, such as a distributor body, for a groovinggoperation.
Still another ob'jcfz is'the-provision of means whereby the Y cutters, while movable radially" in the tool, will be maintained in; proper cutting position with respect tc-each other and the cylinder during the grooving" operation thus insuring a clean-i even and precision 'grooving of the cylinder wall.
A'still further object of this-invention consists iri'the provision of indicating-means whereby the extent of l the cut being-made may at all times quickly and easily bedeterm'-ined*by the'operator, thus eliminatingunnecessary emitting or thinning of'the cylinder -wal-l:--
Other objects and advantages of my invention will become more apparent as the following description of one embodiment thereof progresses, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical central section through a tool embodying my invention and shown applied in use on a distributor casing or cylinder.
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, and,
Figure 3 is a view taken in the direction of line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In carrying out my invention as illustrated in the drawings, I provide a tool which can quickly and easily be applied to a cylinder such as a distributor body in an automotive ignition system as shown in Figure 1. The distributor body I is grooved at 2 annularly along its inner wall 2. to receiveand he" op'eratively engaged by the ro tating: breaker assembly of the distributor.
Referring-{now more particularly to Figure .1' thetool comprisesa ba'se 3' having an aXia'lopening 4,' -rece'iving the r'e'dudedendof the shaftf5' in axial alignment, the-'shaftand the base being securelyweld'ed tcgethera's at 6 A--boidy 1 having an internally threa'dediopen ing 'll' axially aligned with" the"operiing 4 is sup ported on the base' 3, the b'ottom'of the body beinggroovedconcntric'ally; as at :9? and radially grooved at Ill for" purposes whichwill'rpresently appear. v
Bolts' ll are provided to -removably secure the base 3 and body I together.
The body 1 is formedwith'an upwardlyrextending central portion. 12 through which the' opening 8 extends there being a"boss' formed':;at"I3, An outer collar having an upright po'rtion I 4 and alateral flange portion l5 'isl'fi tted over the'abody as shown 'in Fig'ure 1:: Thiscollar: is' adapted. to carry a plurality of clampingimembersi'lfi for clamping the distributor casing oricylind er in the tool. These clamps are chann'el 'orC-shaped and are pivotally supported-at l l on the-brackets I8'which are'in turrr bolted rsecuredto the side wall of the body-'portionftz; Each clamp l6 is provided'with an adju's'tableclamping" screw I9 adapted "to engage and grip;theurrder'surfaces of the articletobe i e-grooved."
The under portion of'"th'e" collar fiange'io is formed with an annular ribztznrabuttingon-one side with the outerfwali zzitoffthe'body 'portion 1-, the-rib being "withintthe circumference or 'the flange [5 to provide a seat 22 for the upper end 23 of the article I as illustrated in Figure 1.
An upstanding rib 24 is formed on the collar, and between this and the base IS an indicating plate 25 is positioned and secured to the portion l2 of the body I by means of the screws 26.
A knurled knob 21 is formed on the upper end of the screw 28 for turning and adjusting the screw axially in the body I. The screw 28 has a flat side 29 to prevent relative rotational movement between it and the indicating pointer 30 which is carried on the screw. This pointer is urged downwardly on the screw by means of a coil spring 3| to lie flat upon and to scan the upper surface of the plate 25 upon which are marked graduations or other indicia 32 relating to the feed of the cutters carried between the body I and the base 3.
A plurality of cutters 33 are radially arranged between the base 3 and the body I to move longitudinally in the radial grooves or slots I0, and
rear ends of said cutters having downwardly inclined walls 34 for engagement by the conical end 35 of the screw 28 which is projected downwardly between the respective adjacent rear ends of the cutters. These ends of the cutters overlie the opening 4 in the base 3 and it will readily be seen that when the screw 28 is adjusted downwardly the cutters 33 will be forced radially outwardly to engage the groove 2 in the distributor body.
Of course, by means of the pointer 30 and indicia 32 the proper cutting depth ma readily be determined. The cutters are first simultaneously fed outwardly to engage the groove 2 by adjusting the screw 28 and the reading on the scale 25 is noted. Then by turning the screw 28 to exert additional outward pressure on the cutters the article is ready for re-grooving.
It is to be noted that I have provided means for simultaneously and normally exerting a retracting force on the cutters. Such means may consist of an endless resilient member, such as an endless coiled spring 36, which is seated in the notches 31 formed in the cutters 33 and which is also seated in the annular groove 9 in the body I. When the spring 36 is in such position it normally is under tension and exerts a force simultaneously urging the cutters radially inwardly toward the axis of the base 3. In feeding the cutters outwardly by rotating the screw 28 in one direction such feed is in opposition to the spring 36, and when the screw is rotated in an opposite direction the forces exerted by the spring 36 on the cutters act to retract the cutters inwardly of the tool.
In use, the tool may be applied to a distributor housing I as shown in Figure 1, the top of the housing abutting the rib 20 and the bottom wall of the flange IS. The clamps l6 are then adjusted and locked in the position shown by tightening the screws [9 against the bottom of the housing I. The shaft of the tool passes through the hub 40 and a split collar 4| is carried on the shaft 5 below the hub of the housing I, the split collar being adapted to be clamped in a vise and when so clamped to grip the shaft 5 tightly. Then the member I4--l5 carrying the clamps l6 and the article I to be re-grooved can be rotated by grasping the clamps l6 and spinning the same on the axis of the shaft 5'in a clockwise direction as seen in Figure 2. Another manner of imparting relative rotative motion between the cutters and the article I is to loosely mount the collar 4| on the shaft 5, holding the assembly l4l5 and I6 against rotation, as in a vise, and applying a wrench or other tool to the lower end of the shaft 5 and then rotating the same.
After the cutters 33 have been adjusted in the groove 2 to efiect the desired cut the article hold screw 28 downwardly.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A regrooving tool comprising a work holder, means pivotally suspended from said holder for removably clamping a work piece thereto, a rotatable cutter support carried. by said work holder, said cutter support comprising a rotatable base on which regrooving cutters are supported, a member carried by said support and having radially disposed cutter'receiving channels opening from its under side and an axially disposed opening through said member, cutter adjusting means threaded into said opening and having a conical inner end engageable with the inner ends of regrooving cutters, a plurality of regrooving cutters slidable radially of said support and along said channels between the base and said member, said cutters each having a transverse guide, and a common resilient means associated with said guides and normally urging said cutters radially inwardly of said support to maintain said cutter inner ends constantly in contact with the inner conical end of said adjusting means.
