IMPROVEMENT IN BORING AND DRILLING MACHINES.

To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. SHERIDAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Portable Drilling and Boring Machine, ot' which the following is a specitication:

My invention has for its object Ato furnish an improved machine for drilling, boring, cutting screw-threads, &c., and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use in either capacity, effective in operation, and

and with the frame of the machine; in the frame made in the form of a segment of, a. truncated cone, and made in two parts, provided at the adjacent ends with iianges to receive the bolts by which said parts are secured to each other adjustably; in the combination of the sliding tool-shaft, the swiveled gear-wheel, the small gear-wheel, the gearwheel and band-pulley, the driving gearwheel, band and band-pulley, the double clutch, and the three-armed clutch-lever with each other, and with the frame and drivingshai't; in the combination ot' the studs, the cross-bar, the swiveled screw, the gear-wheels, the shaft, the star-wheel, the pin, and the b'ar' with sliding tool-shaft, the frame, and the driving mechanism; in the combination ofthe crank and the pin with the swiveled screw, the sliding tool-shaft, and the gear-wheel and l1n the tubular piece, thepivoted lever, the swiveled screw, the notched cutter, and the set-screw, in combination with each other and with the sliding tool-shaft, as hereinafter fully described.

The base E is secured to the table A, when adjusted, by bolts F, which pass through short slots in the base E and table A. The slots in the base and in the table cross each other at right angles, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the machine may be adjusted by simply loosening the nuts of the bolts F without its being necessary to remove the said bolts. G are screws which pass down through-the base E, and the flattened ends ot' which rest against the table A. The screws Gr thus enable the machine to be conveniently adjusted horizontally or leveled. The screws G enable it to be conveniently adjusted vertically or plumbed, and the bolts F secure it firmly in place when adjusted. His the upright frame of the machine, which is made in the form of a segment of a hollow cone, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The segment or frame H is made in two parts, the upper. end of the lower part and the lower end of the upper part oi' which are provided with a flange, I, which iianges I are securely bolted to each other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.v By this construction `the upper and lower parts oi the frame H mayl be adjusted upon each* other as convenience may require. J is the tool-holder, in the lower end of which is formed a socket to receive the tool in the ordinary manner. The lower part of the toolholding shaft J passes through bearin gs formed in or attached to the bar K, the ends of which are formed upon or are secured to the lower part of the frame A. The upper part of the shaft J passes up through the hub ofthe bevelgear wheel L, with which it is'connected by a tongue and groove, so that the said wheel may carry the said tool-holder with it in its revolution, while the said tool-holder may be free to move longitudinally in said wheel. The lower end of the hub of the wheel L revolves in bearings in the upper end ofthe fra-me H.

The pulley S and gear-wheel T revolve loosely upon the shaft U, and are entirely independent of each other, so that the machine may be driven by either the pulley S or the gear-wheel T. The shaft U is driven by any convenient power, and is revolved continuously in the same direction. The shaft U is provided with two sliding clutches, V XV, and is made to carry the baud-pulley S or gear-wheel T with it in its revolutions, according as one or the other of the clutches V W are thrown into gear. X is a three-armed lever, which is pivoted at its angle to an arm or bracket, Y, attached to the upper part of the frame H. Upon the ends of two ot' the arms of the lever X are formed forks, which enter grooves in the clutches V W, so that either of the clutches V W may be thrown into and the other out of gear by a single movement of the lever X. The third arm of the lever X serves as a handle for convenience in operating it. Power may be applied directly to the shaft U, or by means of another shaft, A', meeting it at an angle, and connected with it by bevelgear wheels B C. The shafts UA are held in their proper relative position by an arm or bar, D', bent at such an angle or curve that the two shafts may pass through and revolve in the ends of the said bar D'. To the upper side of the geanwheel L, upon theopposite sides of the center, are attached the lower ends ot two Studs, E', the upper ends of which are connected by a bar, F. To the middle part ofthe bar F' is swiveled a screw, G', which screws into the upper end of the tool-holder J, so that the tool can be fed down to its work or raised from its work by turning the said screw G' in one or the other To the swiveled screw G is attached a bevel-gear wheel, H', into the teeth of which mesh the teeth of the bevelu gear wheel l', attached to the inner end of the shaft J'. The inner part of the shaft J' revolves in bearings in a short stud, K', attached to the bar F', and its outer part revolves in bearings in an arm, L', attached to one ot' the studs E. To the outer end of the shaft J is attached a star-wheel, M', which, at each revolution of the gear-wheel L, strikes against a pin, N', attached to a bar, O', the lower end ot' which is attached to the bracket O or other convenient support. The upper part of the bar 0 is bent inward, and has a hole formed in its inner end to receive the upper part of the swiveled screw G. To the upper end of the swiveled screw G' is attached a crank, P'. In the crank P', and in. the bar O', is formed a hole to receive a pin, Q', to prevent the swiveled screw G' from turning, so that each revolution of the gearwheel L will feed the tool-shaft J down the distance of one thread of the swiveled screw G. InA this case the star-wheel M or piu N' should be detached.
This is the adjustment used when ,cutting screw-threads.
,For drilling, the pin Q is removed, allowing the drill to be fed down at each revolution by the action of the star-wheel M' and pin N'. By turning the crank by hand, the tool may be run back quickly.
Upon the lower end of the tool-shaft J is eut a screw-thread to receive the screwthread cut in the inner surface of the upper end of the tubular piece It'. In the cavity of the piece R' is placed a lever, S', the middle part of which is pivoted to the middle part of the said piece It'. T' is a screw, which passes through and is swiveled to the upper part ot' the piece It', and passes through a screw-hole in the upper end of the lever S. The lower end of the lever S' is made wedge-shaped to enter notches in the upper side ofthe tool U', which is secured in place by a screw, V', passing in through the closed bottom of the piece R', as shown in Figs. l and 3. By this device, when a female screw-thread has been cut', the cutter U may be withdrawn from said thread, allowing the holder to be run out quickly, and without danger of injuring said screw-thread.
Having thus ldescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the lianged table A B, flanged base E D, set-screws U and G, and bolts F with each other, and with the frame H of the machine, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The frame H, made in the form ot' a segment of a truncated cone, and made in two parts, provided at their adjacent ends with flanges I to receive the bolts by which said parts are secured to each other adjustably, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of the sliding tool-shaft J, the swiveled gear-wheel L, the small gearwheel M, the gear-wheel and bandpulley Q, R, the driving gear-wheel band and bandpulley T R S, the double clutch W and V, the three-armed clutch-lever X with each other, and with the frame H and driving'- shaft U, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination ofthe studs E', crossbar F', swiveled screw G', gear-wheels H' I', shaft J', star-wheel M', pin N', and bar O' with the sliding tool-shaft J, frame H, and driving mechanism, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination of the crank P and pin Q' with the lswiveled screw G', the sliding tool-shaft J', and gear-wheel L, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The tubular piece R', the pivoted lever S', the swiveled screw T', the notched cutter U', and the set-screw V', in combination with each other, and with the sliding tool-shaft J, substantially as herein shown and described.
