Definitions
- the present invention relates to a servicing arrangement for spinning machines, and more particularly to an arrangement for independently inspecting and servicing individual spinning units of a spinning machine.
- Known spinning machines comprise a series of spinning units, each of which includes a rotary spinning chamber, feeding and combing means for feeding a sliver into the rotary spinning chamber, and a discharge channel through which the finished yarn is withdrawn.
- Spinning devices in which the fibers are combed out by a rotating combing roller and transported into the rotary spinning chamber have the disadvantage that if a spinning device becomes clogged by fibers, the spinning chamber, the combing roller and the inlet and discharge channels are not readily accessible so that the respective spinning unit must be disassembled in a time consuming and difiicult operation.
- Another machine for continuous spindleless spinning is known in which a plurality of spinning units is arranged in a row on a machine frame, and where feed rollers are provided for the supply of the slivers, and drawoif rollers for withdrawing the finished yarn from the spinning chambers.
- the drive means for the rotary spinning chambers, combing rollers, feeding rollers and drawoff rollers include a main shaft or shafts extending along the row of spinning units and driving all rotary elements of the spinning units simultaneously.
- the feed rollers are connected with a drive means by separate couplings, controlled by sensing means which sense an improper operation, so that the feed rollers of the several units can be individually stopped in the event of a yarn breakage.
- the rotary spinning chamber, and other rotary spinning means continue to rotate even after the supply of the sliver by the feed roller has been stopped and if it becomes necessary to clean one spinning unit, or more particularly its spinning chamber, the inlet or discharge channels, or to repair a spinning unit, it is not possible to individually disengage the respective spinning unit from the drive means, and it is necessary to stop the entire machine and all spinning units, while one spinning unit is being serviced or repaired resulting in a reduced output and economic losses.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a spinning machine in which each spinning unit can be individually separated from the common drive means of the spinning machine so that, while one spinning unit is being serviced, the other spinning units continue to operate.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a spinning unit having first and second parts, each of which includes spinning means, and to mount the parts movable between separated and operative positions so that the spinning means are fully accessible when the two parts of a unit are separated.
- Another object of the invention is to automatically separate the spinning means of each unit from the drive means of the machine when the above-mentioned two parts of the spinning unit are separated for the purpose of 3,375,649 Patented Apr. 2., 1968 having access to the spinning means, so that the spinning means are automatically stopped when placed in a position suitable for servicing.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a spinning unit comprising two parts one of which carries a rotary spinning chamber and the other of which carries a separator having a discharge passage coinciding with the axis of rotation of the spinning chamber in the normal working position of the spinning unit, while upon separation of the two parts of the spinning unit, the separator and discharge passage are located outside of the spinning chamber and spaced from the same so that the spinning chamber and the discharge passage can be cleaned.
- a spinning unit comprises first and second supports, first rotary spinning means mounted on the first support for rotation about a first axis, and second spinning means mounted on the second support and having a second axis.
- the first and second supports are mounted on a frame for movement between two positions for moving the first and second spinning means between a normal working position in which the axes of the first and second spinning means coincide and the same cooperate in a spinning operation, and an inoperative position in which the first and second spinning means are separated and accessible for inspection and service.
- the first and second supports are mounted on the frame of the machine for angular movement about parallel hinge axes.
- the first spinning means includes the rotary spinning chamber
- the second spinning means includes a part, such as a separator having a central discharge passage, located in the spinning chamber in the working position of the spinning unit, but moving out of the spinning chamber in the inoperative position of the unit where both the spinning chamber and the separator are accessible.
- drive means such as belts
- Each spinning unit includes rotary spinning means, and coupling means, such as a pulley, connected with the spinning means for rotation.
- the pulleys engage the belts of the drive means so that the spinning means are coupled withthe .drive means and are driven.
- any spinning units requires inspection or servicing, it is moved to an inoperative position in which the pulley, or other coupling means, is separated from the drive means so that the spinning means do not rotate and are at rest. In this manner, each unit can be inde endently serviced, without disturbing the continued operation of the spinning means of all other units of the machine.

- Support casing 17 has a catch projection 18 cooperating with a latch 57 which is part of a bell crank lever 56 which has a handle 58, and is mounted on hinge pin 13.
- Latch 56, 57 is spring-loaded or may be gravity operated to snap behind catch 18 when support housings 14 and 17 are placed in the normal position shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, but upon actuation of handle 58, latch 57 will release catch 18, and support casing 17 will drop to the tilted inoperative position shown in FIG.
- Support casing 14 rotatably supports spinning means in the form of a spinning chamber 3, whose shaft projects out of support casing 14 and carries a pulley engaging the surface of belt 2 in the normal working position, so that the spinning chambers of all spinning units are simultaneously driven by drive belt 2 which extends along the length of frame 1 as explained with reference to FIG. 1.
- a rail 22 extending along the frame carries a brake lining 21 which is located opposite and parallel to belt 2, and positioned so as to be engaged by pulley 15 when support casing 14 is in the tilted position of FIG. 4.
- support casing 14 has a circular opening 15 in front of spinning chamber 3, so that the spinning chamber is accessible and accummulated fibers can be cleaned out.
- Support casing 17 is substantially L-shaped and has a lower casing portion mounted on shaft 8 in which a drive shaft 6 is located, as described with reference to FIG. 1.
- a gear 23 is fixed to drive shaft 6, as best seen in FIG. 5, and has a peripheral portion projecting out of a slot in tubular member 8 and meshing with a gear 25 located in a cavity 26 and mounted on a shaft 27 freely rotatable, but non-movable in axial direction.

- Coupling part 28 has an armature portion surrounded by electromagnetic winding 29, and engaged by a spring 46 which biasses coupling part 28 to move in axial direction to a coupling position engaging coupling part 28a.
- winding 29 when winding 29 is energized, the force of spring 46 is overcome, coupling part 28 moved to a disengaged position, and the driving connection between drive shaft 6 and shaft 27 is interrupted.
- Winding 29 is connected to a power source 45 over a sensing switch 42 which is normally open, and is closed when sensing a disturbance in the spinning operation, as will be described hereinafter.
- a capacitor 60 and a resistor 61 are connected in parallel with sensing switch 42, and a signal lamp 44 has one terminal directly connected to power source 45 and the other terminal connected over resistor 61 and sensing switch 42 to the power source so that upon closure of sensing switch 42, signal lamp 44 will be energized, but at a lesser voltage than winding 29.
- Capacitor 60 prevents sparking of the contacts of switch 42.
- Signal lamp 44 is located in a housing part 53 and illuminates a translucent plate 54 which has an edge portion located on the surface of support casing 17, which is illuminated by light diffused in translucent plate 54 when signal lamp 42 lights up.
- Housing part 53 also supports the feeler of sensing switch 42 opposite the discharge tube for the spun fibers.

If any spinning unit is to be inspected and placed in the inoperative position of FIG. 4 in which support casing 17 is downward tilted, pulley 48 of the respective spinning unit is separated from drive belt 4,. and the combing roller 5 is no longer driven.
- the sliver 34 is fed to the combing roller 5 which sepa-- rates the fibers which pass through channel 36 further past a separator 38 which directs the fibers toward the rotating inner surface of spinning chamber 3 so that the fibers are spun and produce a filament or yarn 40 which passes through a central passage 51 in separator 38, a discharge channel in support casing 17 terminating in discharge tube 41 and finally between a pair of transporting rollers 40a, as shown in FIG. 3, while holding a feeler of sensing switch 42.
- feeler 42 will be released and sensing switch 42 will close, so that winding 29 is energized, coupling means 28, 28a disengaged, and feed roller means 33 stopped so that the sliver 34 is no longer transported toward combing roller and spinning chamber 3 which continue to rotate in the position of FIG. 3.
- Signal lamp 44 also lights up when switch 42 closes, so that the edge of translucent plate 54 is illuminated, calling the attention of the operator to the respective spinning unit where the thread breakage occurred.
- support casing 17 drops further to the position shown in FIG. 4, and when pin 49 releases the front wall of support casing 14, the same tends to assume the tilted position shown in FIG. 4 by the action of the force of gravity, and is held in the tilted position by connecting means 16 due to the Weight of support casing 17.
- pulley separates from drive belt 2 and engages the braking surface 21 so that spinning chamber 3 is stopped.
- Spinning chamber 3 is now completely accessible through opening 50, and separator passage 39 and the other passages in support casing 17 are also accessible for inspection and servicing, so that clogging fiber deposits can be removed from the spinning means in casing 14 and from the spinning means in casing 17.
- the axis of rotation of the spinning chamber 3 coincides with the discharge passage 39 of separator 38 in the normal working position of FIG. 3.
- the hinge axes formed by hinge pin 13 and tubular member 8, are parallel, and when support casings 14 and 17 assume the tilted position shown in FIG. 4, the axis of rotation of spinning chamber 3 and discharge passage 39 are located in a common plane. Due to the fact that a plane passing through the hinge axes is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of spinning chamber 3 in the normal working position, separator 38 moves substantially in the direction of the axis of rotation of spinning chamber 3 from its operative position shown in FIG. 3 to the position shown in FIG. 6 so that separator 38 clears the opening 50.
