Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
IV. H. GRAY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN EPAU LETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,702, dated November 12, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IV. H. GRAY, of N o. 4 Crocketts court, in the city of Philadelphia and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Epaulets; and I do here- K by declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a central longitudinal section of an epaulet with my improvement; Fig. 2, a perspective view of lthe outer shell in an inverted position; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the inner shell without the fringe, showing its under side.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in a novel mode of attaching the fringe to the outer shell of the epaulet for facilitating the removal of the fringe when the shellrequires cleaning and when it is to be worn without fringe.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the outer shell of the epaulet, constructed in the same manner as the shells commonly worn without fringe, having attached to it the usual elastic metal strap a, Figs. l and 2, and fitted with the usual button b, Fig. l, for securing it to the coat.
B is a separate plate, which I call the detachable inner shell, to which the fringe fis attached by sewing or by a lace passing through holes t' t' provided in the said plate near the edge thereof. This shell is of a form to fit snugly within the outer shell A at a short distance from the margin thereof, and has soldered to or otherwise attached to it a strip of metal c, between which and the outer margin of the outer shellA the fringe is kept even when the inner shell B is placed in the outer shell A, and the said shell B has two or three corrugations d d extending across it from back to front and presenting their con vex surfaces on the under side, and between the outermost of these corrugat-ions and the part of the said shell B which comes opposite to the outside of the shoulder there is a slot e in the said shell for the reception of the elastic metal strap a, which, besides serving its usual purpose, serves to secure the detachable inner shell B in the outer shell A by pressing on the inner edge of the said slot e and upon one or more of the corrugations CZ d, as shown in Fig. l.
To detach the fringe from theslIe1lA,thebut ton b is unfastened and the epaulet removed from the shoulder, and the detachable inner shell B, having the fringe attached, is drawn olf the strap a. To attach the fringe again, the end of the strap a is inserted in the slot e and the inner shell B slipped along the said strap into the shell A, and on the epaulet being applied to the coat and secured by the button b the strap a secures the inner shell very firmly within the outer one without the necessity 0f any other fastenings for that purpose.
I do not claim the attachment of the fringe to a piece detachable from the shell; but
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Securing the detachable inner shell B, having the fringe attached, to the outer shell A by means of the strap a in the manner substantially as herein described, whereby the necessity of other fastenings for that purpose is dispensed with.
W. H. GRAY.
