Description
UNITED sTArEs PAIENT oEEIoE.
VILLIAM F. KBLER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT-STUD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,496, dated August '7, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM F. KBLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Studs for Fastening Bosoms of Shirts Together; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description hereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l, represents a. perspective View of the article complete; F ig. 2, a longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a geometrical front view thereof; Fig. 4, a detached view of the button.
The construction of my stud is as follows. It consists of two separate parts: a button A with a screw shank, which terminates in a long tapered sharp point, as clearly shown in the drawings, and a bottom piece B, which is made with a slit, and forms an elastic clamp. At the front end of the upper lip of said clamp B thereis a round projection o through which a hole passes, which is provided with a screw thread. This screw hole is to receive the shank of button A. The lower lip of clamp B is also provided with a projection c which forms a socket and guard for the sharp point of the button A.
In order to apply my stud, it is necessary l to slide the inner edge of the bosom into the slit of the clamp B, and adjust said clamp so as to correspond with a small button hole in the outer part of the bosom. Clamp B,
being made elastic, and so as to pinch the I cloth slightly will retain its position, while the person is getting ready to insert the button. The button A is then inserted through the button hole in the front part of bosom, into the screw hole in clamp B. Then a slight pressure will force the sharp point of button A through the inner part of the bosom, between the two lips of clamp B, and lastly a few turns of button A will screw its shank into the screw hole of clamp B, and thereby secure the position of said button.
The advantages gained by my stud are evident. It gives a neat appearance to the bosom, as no button hole is visible behind the stud, the button hole being so small and round, that the stud covers it. The button holes are not liable to tear, as is frequently the case where the head of a stud is to be forced through the hole.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stud with a screw shank and point in combination with a spring clamp, substantially as herein described.
WILLIAM E. KBLER.
