Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. FRENCH, 2D, 0F BOSTON,`MASSACHUSETTS.
IM PROVEM ENT IN BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,3241, dated May 1, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be itknown that I, CHARLES A. FRENCH, 2d, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons for Fastening Garments, Snc. and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being -had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure lis a view showing the button applied to the garment. Fig. 2 is a View ofthe under side ot' the cloth, showing the manner in which I secure the button to the same. Fig. 3 is a central section taken in the line x x, Fig-.1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to .provide a quick and reliable mode of securing a button to a garment, so that the same will not become detached ofits own accord; and it consists in providing the button with a neck, which is either a sind or a tube, having two washers on its inner end, between which the cloth is placed and secured by eyeleting or riveting the tube or stud, as the case may be.
"Io enable others to understand my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the cloth or thicknesses of cloth to which the button is to be attached. Bis the button, which may be made of any desired shape or style. Through this button I insert a metal stud or metallic tube, a, havin ga shoulder, b, against which the inner side ofthe body rests, and. secure it to the button by riveting it a stud, or eyeleting it if a tube, directly to the top ofthe body of thebutton, or to awasher, c, placed on the face of the button. Near the other end of the stud or tube a, I form another shoulder, d, against which a washer, c, is placed.
A suitable hole having been made in the cloth or garment, the end of the stud or tube c is put through it and the cloth is pressed against the washer e, and another washer, f, is put upon the stud or tube and the end of the said stud or tube eyeleted or riveted down upon it, when it will be found that the button is secured firmly in the cloth or garment.
Buttons secured in this manner are not likely to tear the cloth, however great a strain there may be upon them. rIhe washer on each side prevents this, as well as an enlargement of the hole through which the stud passes sufcient to allow it to be pulled out, and the said washers tightly clamp the cloth or garment and yet allow the button to turn freely, which decreases the liability of the said cloth tearing at the particular spot where the button is secured.
These buttons can bcvmade so as to sell at a very low rate-far cheaper than were they made with screws and the like, so as to be detachable, and it may be remarked that detachable buttons often become detached atan inopportune time, and some part is lost and the whole is rendered useless.'
With my button the parts are of such ordinary construction that they can be manufactured at a very low rate, and should one become lost it can be easily replaced, and should it be necessary to take it oft' of the cloth or garment, which does not often happen, the inside or washer last put on can be pried ott' with a penknife without much difficulty, and,
indeed, should the loop of the button any time become loose and drop off, another can be put in its place and secured without the necessity of taking the stud or tube out of the garment.
Hence my button recommends itself for cheapness, for the quick and ready manner in which it may be inserted, and for its reliability in all respects.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe button B, shouldered shank a b d, and washers or eyelets e f, substantially as and for the purpose described.
CHAS. A. FRENCH, 2D.
