IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,908, dated September 15, 1863.

Beit known that l, LAVINIA H. FOY, of the city and county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Oorset, Shoulder-Brace, and Skirt-Supporter; and l do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, ret'- erence being had .to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specication, and in which- Figure l represents a front view of the same. Fig. 2 represents a. section on line A B, Fig. l, and Figs. 3, 4, 5, b', 7,8, and 9 represent detached parts.

In the drawings, A represents the main part which forms the body B. A long, narrow piece is cut from the lower edge across the back and as far toward the front as it is desirable that the rirn should extend, as seen at a a, Fig. 4, the rim C itself being cut separately and nearly in the form ot' a semicircle, as seen at C', Fig. 5. The inner edge b, and ends c c, ofthe rim O are stitched to thelower part, A', ofthe waist, and the hoop D inserted in the outer edge thereof". The straps E E are in two parts, the front and back parts of which are connected by elastics d d. lhe shoulderbrace F is curved to fit the arm, broad on the shoulder, as seen at e, and gradually tapering to the other extremity, f, where it is fastened lhe shoulder-brace is so made that it can be readily detached `from the straps E, eylet-holes h being formed in each for the reception of a fastening-tape or other proper connecting device. Slits a a are made in the frontpart ot' A, and gores G G inserted to give the proper fullness for the bosom. A

ln Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7,and 8 the parts are shown as they appear before the article is made up.

ln the drawings,t' i represent metal caps, which may be attached so as to cover the ends of the hoop D. They are made with two prongs or points, one ot' which is seen at i in Fig. 9. After the hoop D has been inserted in the rim O these metal caps may be placed over the cloth which covers thc ends of the hoop D, as shown in the drawings, and their prongs or points i forced through the cloth-one on each side of the hoop-and their projecting ends (see Fig. 9) then bent or riveted down.

Having described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. Forming the rim O by cutting out a piece from the lower part, A', ot the waist A, as seen in Fig. et at a a, and inserting the seinicircle piece O', Fig. 5.

2. The combination, with the waist A, and straps E E, of detachable shoulder-braces F.
