Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY COGSWELL, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
FASTENING Foa "SLEEVE-BUTTONS.
Specoaton of Letters Patent No. 20,194, dated May 11, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY CoGswELL, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleeve-Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l, is a longitudinal section of my improvement; Fig. 2, a transverse section of ditto; and Fig. 3, an inner side view of ditto.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in pivoting a bar to a project-ion at one end of the under side of a plate, said bar being secured to a' projection at the opposite end of the plate by a snap the whole being so arranged that one button is made to answer the purpose of two linked plates that have hitherto been commonly used.
To enable those skilled in the art, to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a plate which may be of circular, oval, or any proper form, and of a requisite size. These plates may be constructed in any ornamental way and set with precious stones, cameos, &c., similar to the ordinary linked sleeve-buttons in ordinary use.
To the inner side of the plate A, two projections a, Z9, are attached, one near each end of the plate, as shown in Figs. l and 3. To the project-ion a, one end of a bar B, is pivoted, as shown at c; and the opposite end of the bar has a shoulder d, formed on it.
In the projection b, a catch e, is iitted and pivo-ted, as shown at f. This catch has a recess or notch g, made in it, to receive the shoulder d, of bar B; and a projection h, is at the back of the catch e, said projection bearing on an india-rubber spring z', which is fitted in the projection I); said spring having a tendency to keep the notch g, over the shoulder CZ of the bar B. The outer end of the projection It, of catch e, has a recess made in it to receive the nail of the finger, so that the notch g, may be thrown back and the bar B, liberated when desired.
The end of the shoulder d, is rounded or beveled at its inner side, so that it may, by being pressed on the edge of catch e, throw it back to enter the notch g.
The button is used by passing the bar B, through the button holes of the sleeve or Wristband and securing its end in the proj ection The usual linked buttons, by this improvement, are dispensed with, and the device has a much neater appearance than the linked buttons, and as they contain less stock may be made much cheaper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
Constructing sleeve-buttons by attaching the bar B, to the projections a, b, at the inner side of the plate A, as shown, viz: one end of the bar being pivoted in one projection a, and the other project-ion containing a catch e, and spring z', to retain the opposite end of the bar when closed, substantially as shown and described.
