IMPROVEMENT IN THE MODE 0F ATTACHING BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. l 10,03 0, dated December 13, 1870.
To all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN GIROUX, of Chicago, in the county of .Cook and State of provements in Boot and Shoe Heel Attachments, and I do hereby declare the following same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is abottom plan view of a boot or shoe heel, showing my improved attachment; and Fig. l2-is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.

My invention has for its object to prevent the unequal .wear of boot and shoe heels; and to this end it consists in a reversible skeleton plate of metal pivoted to the center of the heel,
In the accompanying drawings, A is the heel of a boot or shoe constructed in the usual manner.
B is a metal rim, corresponding in form to the shape of the heel, and secured to a central boss, C, by means of the braces D, as shown. The plate-braces and boss are all formed in one piece, and may be either cast or struck up in skeleton form sufficient strength is afforded for all purposes without an unnecessary weight of metal.
E is anangular plate let into the center Vof l the heel and secured firmly in place by means of screws. To the center of this plate the rim is attached by means of a pivot, F, passing through theboss and` through said plate, as shown. The pivot is headed upon the under side of the plate to prevent its being pulled out or becoming detached. By this connection the rim is adapted to be iitted accurately to the heel, and is secured in the required position by means of the screws g. I prefer to construct one or more of these screws with a pointed head to perform the additional office of a Creeper to be used upon ice or snow. The rim may be corrugated, if desired, or flanged, and filled with rubber between the flanges. By centering ther rim at the plate E the former is held securely in place, and cannot be kicked or torn off, as would be the case if the rim` alonewere screwed to the heel. When the rim becomes worn upon one side, itcan easily be changed to the other boot or shoe heel, and thereby caused to wear evenly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The central plate, E, in combination with the central boss, C, braces D, metallic rim B, and the fasteningscrewsg, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
