UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS B. PRAHAR, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CHARLES S. SHEPARD, OF SAME PLACE.
BAG OR SATCHEL FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,307, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed December 2, 1885. Serial No. 184,475. (No model.)
To all w/wm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS B. PRAHAR, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Purse, Pocket-Book, and Hand-Bag Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a purseframe to which my improved fastening has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional edge elevation of the same, taken through the line 00 a:, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same opened.
The object of this invention is to provide fastenings for purse, pocket-book, and hand bag frames, constructed in such a manner that they will hold the frames securely closed and can be readily unfastened.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the fastening, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A and B represent the two parts of the frame, which are hinged to each other in the ordinary manner.
To the part B of the frame is soldered or otherwise secured the end of a socket, O, in such a position that the said end of the socket will overlap the other part, A, of the frame when the said frame is closed, as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the outer end of the socket O is fitted a cap, D, to the inner side of the top of which is secured the stem of a catch, E, which stem passes down through the socketO and through aguide-hole in the inner flange of the part B of the frame. The catch E projects inward below the flange of the part B of the frame, has the upper side of its end beveled, and is recessed in its upper side to form a shoulder to engage with the edge of the catch-plate F, attached to or formed upon the flange of the part A of the frame. The catch E also engages with the catchplate G, formed upon or attached to the flangeof the part B of the frame in such a position that the two catclrplates F G will fit against each other when the frame is closed, and both engage with the catch E. The catch-plates F G have recesses formed in them, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3, or elongated apertures, as shown in dotted lines in the said figure; The first c011- struction is preferred, as being neater and allowing the catelrplates to be made shorter. \Vit-h this construction the engagement of the catch E with the catch-plate F fastens the frame securely when closed, and the engagement of the catch E with the two catch-plates F G holds the parts of the frame when closed from lateral movement upon each other.
To the socket G is pivoted a ring, H, to adapt the purse to be suspended from a lad ys belt, watch guard, or other support. The
catch E is drawn outward and held in gear with the catch-plates F G by a spiral spring, I, placed upon the stem of the said catch E within the socket O, with its inner end resting against the bottom of the said socket and its outer end resting against the cap D, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described lily-invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a pocket-book or handbag fastening, the combination, with the parts A B of the frame, the socket 0, attached to one part of the frame, the cap D, fitted upon the said socket, the catch E, attached to the said cap, and the spring Z, placed upon the catch-stem and interposed between the bottom of the said socket and the said cap, of the catclrplates F G, having recesses to receive the said clasp, sub stantially as herein shown and described, whereby the parts of the frame when closed will be securely fastened and held from lateral movement upon each other, as set forth.
LOUIS B. PRAHAR.
