UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES MOKENNEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METALLIC BAYONET-SCABBARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,269, dated January 12. 1886.
Application filed November 18, 1885. Serial No.183f108. (No model.)
I To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, JAMEs MOKENNEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Bayonet-scabbards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a bayonet-scabhard and its throg and beltloop to which my improvement has been applied, part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, part being broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken through the line 00 00, Fig. 2, parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a bayonet-scabbard and throg, part being broken away, and showing the ordinary construction.
The object of this invention is to provide bayonet-scabbards constructed in such a manner that the connection between the scabbards and the throgs will be firmer and more secure than with the ordinary construction, and the entrance of the points of the bayonets, when being sheathed, between the scabbards and the throgs will be prevented.
The invention consists in the construction of a bayonet-scabbard with an outwardly-projecting flange upon the angular side of its upper end to overlap the upper edge of the' throg, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a metallic scabbard for a triangular bayonet.
B is the throg that receives and carries the scabbard A, and to which is pivoted the loop 0 to receive a belt.
Upon the flat side of the upper end of the scabbard A is formed the ordinary hook-lug,
D,to hook over the upper edge of the throg B and prevent the said scabbard from being pushed through the said throg, and which is secured to the throg B by one or more rivets, E. Upon the edge of the angular side of the scabbard A is formed an outwardly-projecting flange, F, which rests upon the upper edge of the throg B, and further strengthens the said scabbard against being pushed through the said throg. The flange F covers the space or joint between the scabbard A and throg B, so that the point of the bayonet cannot enter the said space or joint when the bayonet is being sheathed, as the sheathing has to be done without looking at the said throg.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A metallic bayonet-scabbard made, sub stantially as herein shown and described, with an outwardly-projecting flange, F, upon the angular side of its upper end to overlap the upper edge of the throg, as and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES MOKENNEY.
