UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR B. BRoNsoN, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
GUN-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,205, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed October 6,1883. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR B. BRoNsoN, of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gun-Cases, of which the following, in connection with the drawing hereunto annexed. and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description.
, The objectof my invention is to provide a case for guns which shall be capable of re ceiving and inclosing the whole gun, or of being separated into two parts, one part adapted to receive the barrel or barrels, and the other the breech, when the barrels are separated from the breech. It is often inconvenient to carry the gun as a whole, as when traveling on horse-back, and it is therefore desirable to be able to take the gun apart and to pack or incase the parts separately.
I am aware that cases have heretofore been made to receive the parts of the gun separately; but so far as I am aware the parts of the case have always been inseparably connected, or even if they could be taken apart they could not be joined together to make one complete case.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the whole case, the parts being joined together. Fig. 2 represents the two parts of the case separated. Fig. 3 represents the front part of the case, or that part which receives the barrels. Figs. 4 and 5 represent the rear part, or that part which receives the rear stock and breech, showing opposite sides.
In carrying out my invention I make the two parts of the case of such a length as to receive the two parts of the gun, respectively, when separated from each other, and preferably with flaps at the open ends, which may be folded over and secured so as to close the open ends of said parts, and so that the two parts may be joined and fastened together to iorm one complete case. The front part (marked A in the drawings) has a flap, a, at one side of its open end, which flap terminates in a strap, a, which is adapted to be buckled into the buckle a when the flap is folded over the end of the case. In this way the barrels may be entirely incased and protected from dampness or dirt. The rear part, B, has a similar flap, b, terminating in a strap, b, which is adapted to be buckled into the buckle I) located on the opposite side from the flap. This part receives the rear or breech part of the gun, and entirely incloses and protects it. It will of course be understood that in carrying out the invention, as just described, the two parts must be made longer than would be necessary to receive the gun as a whole.
In order to overcome the objection of having a case longer than the gun when used, as.
indicated in Fig. 1, I make the parts so that they may be telescoped to an extent necessary to take up the extra length, and so as to fit the gun. When the parts are joined together, as in Fig. l, to receive the whole gun, the flap a and strap a on the part A are extended along the side of the rear stock, and the part B then placed over the whole, and the strap 1) on the part B is buckled into the buckle a on the part A. For additional fastening, an extra strap and buckle may be used on the opposite side.
It is obvious that, instead of straps and buckles for uniting the parts together, other fastening means may be employed-as, for instance, spring catches, hooks, &c.
For convenience in carrying in the hand each of the two parts may be provided with a handle, 0, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A gun-case made in two parts, one part to receive the barrels and the other the breech or rear stock, each of said parts being provided with a flap adapted to be folded over gether to form a complete case for the whole EDGAR B. BaoNsoN,
