No. 331,982. Patented Dec. 8, 1885.

IINITED STATES Parana @rrrca ARTHUR S. LOVEIT, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COFFIN.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,982, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed September 18, 1885. Serial No. 177,507. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR S. Lovsrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burial-caskets or coffins; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter set forth and explained.
My invent-ion is illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burial-casket embodying my invention, one end thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section showing the bottom of my improved burial-casketand also illustrating modifications of one feature of my improvement.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
In the construction of my improved burialcasket or coffin I make the body thereof of any suitable pattern, and at or near the corners thereof, and also, if desired, near the center of each side thereof, I construct recesses A A. These recesses A A may be .of any convenient size and shape; but I preferably construct them in some of the forms shown in Fig. 2, the backs of these recesses being finished with polished wood or cloth, the same as the outside of the case. These recesses are covered with fronts of plate-glass in the form of B or B. The corner-plates Brnay be made either in a curved shape, to conform to the curve of the corner, or may be constructed of flat plates, if desired. These plate-glass fronts B B may be either plain or embossed, as desired. The object of these recesses with glass fronts as described is that they may be filled with masses of flowers or with flower devices to suit the taste. The shape of these recesses A A is not a material part of my invention. I have, however, shown in Fig. 2 several forms of construction thereof. In constructing these recesses in the sides and corners of the casket both the number and location thereof may be varied to suit the taste of the person constructing the casket without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion.
In my application filed June 24, 1885, for improvement in burial-cases or coffins, I show similar recesses, and also glass fronts covering said recesses; but in that application the invention consisted in lining these recesses with mirrors, and the feature of glass fronts covering recesses in the casket not provided with mirrors was not claimed, and this application is for the purpose of covering the feature of the recesses with glass fronts without mirrors.
Having thus fully described my invention so as to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination, in a burial-casket or coffin, of recesses in the corners, sides, or ends of such casket or coffin with glass or other transparent fronts or covers therefor, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR S. LOVETT.
