Description

BURIAL CASE AND GGFFIN.
No. 331,981. Patented Deo. 8, 1885.

UNITED STATES Partnr @erica ARTHUR S. LOVETT, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BURIAL-CASE AND COFFlN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,981, dated December 8. 1885.
Application filed June Q4, 1885. Serial No. 169.685. (Xo model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR S. Lover'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Cases and Coflins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, forming` part of this specication.
My invention relates to improvements in burial-caskets or coftins; and it consistsin the improvements hereinafter set forth and explained.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burial-casket embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the bottom of aburial-casket illustrating modifications of my improvement.
Like letters referto like parts in all the figures.
In constructing my improved burial-casket or coffin I make the body of the casket A of any suitable pattern, and at or near the corners thereof I cut out recesses B, and also, if desired, recesses B at or near the center of the sides. These recesses B and B may be of any convenient size and shape; but Ihave preferably constructed them in the form of a halfhexagon, the faces b b b being plane mirrors, so that a vase, C, containing flowers, may be placed in each of the recesses B and B', and
the reflection of the same in the mirrors b b b, each being at a different angle, will make the recesses appear to be openings in the casket or coffin tilled with flowers. These recesses B are also providedA with plate-glass fronts D, which are made of suitable shape to conform to the curve of the corners of the casket A, and the recesses B' are also provided with dat plat-eglass fronts D. These plate-glass fronts D and D are made removable'` so that the recesses B and B may be provided with dowers when desired.
In Fig. 2 I have shown some modifications of the form and arrangement of the mirrors in the recesses B and B'. However, the shape and arrangement of the mirrors in the recesses may be varied indefinitely, if desired. The
number as Well as the location of the recesses in the casket may also be varied as desired Without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion.
Having thus fully described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A burial-casket or coiiin constructed with recesses in the outside thereof lined with mirrors, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I atx mysignature in presence of two Witnesses.
ARTHUR S. LOVETT.
