(ModeL) H. HUTGHINSON.
BURIAL GASKET. I No. 253,708. Patented Feb. 14,1882.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEDWORTH HUTOHINSON, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
BU RlAL-CAS-KET- SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 253,708, dated February 14, 1882. I Application filedJune 2B, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HEnWoR'rH HUTCHIN- soN,of Burlington,in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Gaskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view representing one ofthe corners of myimproved burial-casket with its cover. Fig. 2 is a horizontal crosssection through the corner of the body of the casket. Fig. 3 is a top view of acornerof the same with the cover removed. Fig. 4is a perspective view of the metallic corner of the lid or cover detached; and Fig. 5 is a view of the under side of one of the corners of the cover.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention contemplates an improved construction of burial-caskets, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A is the body of the casket, the end and side pieces of which are grooved, as shown at a a, to receive the side flanges, b, of metallic corners B. Each of these corners is cast with bent lugs c c, which, when the corner is placed in its proper position, project laterally on the inside of the body A, to which they are secured by screws d. I prefer to cast the corners B with open spaces 6 for the display of the trimming O, which is nailed or otherwise secured upon a padded wood backing, D, placed in the corner on the inside or back of the open-work corner-plate B, and held in place at its lower end by a screw inserted through the bottom of the casket and at its upper end by a block of wood, E, (see Fig. 3,) the tongues fof which are inserted into the top of the grooves a a, a screw,
g, being inserted throughthe middle of the block down into the backing D.
F is the metallic corner of the cover, which connects the side and end pieces, G G, to which it is secured by the screws h h. This corner is cast solid, of the shape clearly shown in the drawings, with a downward-projecting web or flange, F, which, when the .cover is placed over the body of the casket, projects down over and protects the wooden corner-block E.
H is a wooden corner-brace, which is instrength and durability of the c isket, as well as to the elegance and attractiveness of its appearance, besides saving time and labor in the construction of the casket.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- In a lmrial-casket, the combination of the sides and ends, having vertical recesses or grooves, the open-work corners B, having end flanges, b, and lugs c, the padded hack or panel D, and the corner-block E, having tongues f and screw 9 connecting it to the panel D,which is thereby held in position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
H ED WORTH HUTOHINSON.
