the art to which it appertains to make and' use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a knockdown casket holding burial box; and, to this end, it. consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective View of the invention;
Fig. 2 section;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation;
Fig. 4L is a transverse section, taken on the line H of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the side plates and connected cover;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the bottom plate;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the other side plate; and
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the end plates.
The improved knockdown casket holding burial box is constructed entirely of sheet metal, and comprises end plates 10, side is a longitudinal central vertical plates 11, bottom plate 12, and cover 13.
All of these members are entirely independent and separable from each other, except the back side plate 11 and cover 13, which are connected, at their adjacent longitudinal edges, by a hinge 14, which extends the full length thereof. The end and side plates and cover are all reinforced by pressing therein ribs 15, so arranged as to outline panels and thereby give said members a neat and finished appearance.
To detachably hold the end plates 10 and side plates 11 in assembled relation, the
upright edges of said end plates are folded to form channel flanges 16, which extend inward at right angles thereto, and the upright edges of said side plates are bent outward upon themselves to form flanges 17, with which the flanges 16 interlock by endwise sliding movement. The bottom plate 12 is detachaibly held interlocked with the side plates 11 by bending the lower longitudinal edges of said side plates outward upon themselves to form flanges 18, and by bending the longitudinal edges of the bottom plate to form channel flanges 19, which extend upward at right angles thereto. The flanges 18 and 19 are adapted to be secured in interlocking arrangement by endwise sliding movement. The ends of the bottom plate 12 are also bent upward to form flanges 20, which overlap the lower horizontal edges of the end plates 10.
The front and end edges of the cover 13 are bent downward to form flanges 21, which cap the upper portion of the box to give the same a neat and finished appearance,
and, at the same time, assist in holding the ends and side plates in true rectangular arrangement. In assembling the box, the bottom plate must be secured to the side plates before the end plates are finally positioned, in order that the lower edges of said end plates may be moved inward of the flanges 20, which cover the joints between the end and bottom plates and also hold said bottom plate against endwise sliding movement.
Each end plate 10 is further reinforced, in addition to its ribs 15, by riveting to its in termediate portion, an upright bar 22, the upper end of which is bent laterally inward at 23. The cover 13 is also further reinforced, in addition to its ribs 15, by a channel bar 24, riveted thereto, with its flanges turned downward and so arranged as to straddle the bent ends 23 of the bars 22, when said cover is closed, and interlock therewith to assist in giving rigidity to the assembled box.
The hinge 14, which connects the cover 13 and back side plate 11, is such that said two members may be folded flat, the one upon the other. Obviously, the members of the box may be very easily and quickly assembled, and when taken apart, may be packed in a comparatively small space, which is highly desirable in shipping or storing. The box is preferably made of galvanized sheet metal so that the same will last a long time, and,
further, will exclude all burrowing animals. It is evident from the above description that the improved knockdown casket holding burial box has many advantages over the customary wooden boX.
What I claim is:
l. A knockdown casket holding metallic burial box comprising end, side and bottom. plates, having detachable sliding interlocking engagement, and a cover having on its inner face a reinforcing channel bar, said end plates having upright reinforcing bars with which said channel bar interlocks when the cover is closed.
2. A knockdown casket holding metallic burial box comprising end, side and bottom plates, having detachable sliding interlocking engagement, and a cover having on its inner face a reinforcing channel bar, said end plates having upright reinforcing bars With inturned ends, with which the channel bar interlocks wvhen the cover is closed.
3. A. knockdown casket holding metallic burial box comprising end, side and bottom plates, said end plates having, on their up right edges, channel flanges which extend at right angles thereto, said side plates having, on their upright and lower horizontal edges, inturned flanges which extend parallel thereto, the channel flanges on the end plates adapted to be interlocked with the inturned flanges on the upright edges of the side plates by endwise sliding movement, said bottom plate having, on its longitudinal edges, channel flanges which extend at right angles thereto and adapted to be interlocked with the longitudinal inturned flanges on the side plates by an endwise sliding movement, and acover hinged to one of the side plates, said bottom plate having, on its ends, upturned flanges which overlap the lower ends of the bottom plate.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED S. BINTLIFF.
