FOLDING COOP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,596, dated September 2, 1890.

Application filed July 1, 1890- Serial No. 357,370. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LRoBERT F. VAUGHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everton, in the county of. Dade and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Coops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in folding coops, the object of which is to constreet a coop that may be caused to collapse or fold within a small compass, and thus economize space when the same is stored for transportation or when not in use.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved coop partly folded. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the coop in a folded condition. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the coop ready for use.

Referring to the various parts of my improved coop by letter, A designates the body or framework, which is composed of the members 1 2 l, which are properly hinged to gethcr at their ends, thus forming an oblong or rectangular inclosure. The bottom 13 is formed of two sections 5 6, one of which 5 is hinged to the member 4:, while the member 6 is hinged to the n1ember5,so that these parts may be folded against each other, as shown in Fig. 2. In like manner the lid C is composed of the members 7 S, the former being hinged to the section of the body, while the meeting edges of the members 7 and 8 are hinged together in the same manner as the members 5 and t3, forming the bottom. The

hinges connecting the members 1 2 -l are so placed that the frame or body thus formed is adapted to fold together, as shown in Fig. or may be opened so that the corners thereof will be rectangular, and it will be seen that when the bottom and the lid are brought into position a complete inelosure will be effected.

In order to lock the lid and bottom in position, I have provided hooks I), which are arranged to engage suitable staples E, secured to the frame. It will be seen that said hooks are arranged in position near the meeting edges of the lid and bottom, and as said meeting edges open upward the hooks will hold the same to their work when brought into engagement. with the staples E. In order to more effectively secure the lid and bottom in position, the notched recesses f on the cross bars F are so placed that the outer edge of the bar forming the frame will be engaged thereby, and thus prevent the frame from folding. The free ends of the cross-bars F are further provided with the locking-arms 3r, which are properly notched or recessed to engage the inner edge of the outside section of the frame, and thereby hold the lid and bottom securely locked.

In order to provide a means of ingress to the cage or coop, the sliding bar If is placed as shown, which is arranged to slide longitudinally in the bearings I, thus enabling the said bar to be withdrawn. In order to lock said bar in its operative position, a hole is formed therein near its middle, which receives the spring-tooth J. In order to open the bar, all that is necessary to do is to raise the springtooth J out of engagement with the hole in said bar, when the lid may be readily forced aside.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The collapsible or folding coop herein described, consisting of the frame A, the folding bottom formed of the members 5 and ('1, the lid composed of the members 7 and S, hinged together, as shown, and the interior hooks D and staples E for locking the coop in operative position, substantially as described.

2. The folding coop herein described and shown, consisting of the body A, adapted to fold upon itself, the end section being formed with the sliding bar secured by the springtooth .I, while the lid and bottom are formed of two members hinged together at their meeting edges and locked in position by the hooks and arms, substantially as described, and for the purpose named.
