Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM o. PECKHAM, oF TROY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAVE-VAULTS.
:t Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 171,418, dated December 21, 1875; application tiled November 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: Y i
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. PEGIIHAM, of Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvementin Grave- Vaults, of which the lfollowing is a specification:
My invention has for its object to substitute for the grave-vault heretofore constructed of brick or stone masonry a sectional vault, constructed of earthenware, cement, or any plastic material, the sections of which will overlap, and, if necessary, lock at the joints.
Figure lis a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal.vertical section at a* x. Fig. 3 is a cross-section at y y. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of one end at z z.
In the drawing, A represents the middle l bottom section, formed with a groove, a, at
each side, to receive the lower edge of theiniddle side panel B. A1 is the head-section ot' the bottom, andl A2 the foot-section, each of which is provided with the side grooves a, and one at the end to receive the head and foot panels G C. The ends of the sections A1 A2, where they abut against the middle sections, overlap the latter, as at b. The side panels B1 B2 at the head and foot have prolongations c at the ends, to interlock with similar ones c on the end panels, Whose ends or sides are provided with vertical grooves d, to receive the ends ot' the side panel, so that the vault will be self-sustaining. D D1 D2 are, respectivelv, the center, head, and foot panels of the cover, grooved under the sides and ends to receive the top edges of the side and end panels ot the vault. The inner ends of the panels are formed with lugs e, to receive and support the ends of the center panel D, which may be provided with a raised shield, having grooves to receive pattern-letters, indicating the name ot the deceased, date of decease, Sac., which letters are heldin their grooves by tilling around them with hydraulic cement.
Each vault will be constructed of two or more sets of sections, according to the size of the coffin it is to contain.
I do not Wish to conline myself to the use of any single material in the construction of these vaults, as it is evident that any plastic material can be used for the purpose.
What l claim as my invention is- The gravevault described, consisting of the end sections A1 and A2, provided with grooves,
the side panels B1 B2, having projections, the
head and l'oot panels C and C', provided with projections, and the head and foot cover pan-V els D1 D2, having grooves, With or without the central section, all substantially as described and shown.
WILLIAM o.` PEOKEAM.
