UNITED STATES tsoaooa PATENT OFFICE.,
BURIAL VAUL'I.
Application filed. July 3i,
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERBERT WILLIAM COLLINS, a citizen of Canada, residing at Grand Forks, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in. Burial Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to a case for containing caskets, the general object of the invention being to provide a case which isV made of cement and which is placed in the grave to receive the casket so that the case will prevent the grave from sinking by the collapsing of the casket or the wooden case which is usually used for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is to make the case in sections so that it may be easily handled and for facilitating its placement in the grave.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a side view of the case.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 3 isa section on line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4; is a view of one of the sections alone.
Figure 5 is a View of one of the end sections.
In these views, l indicates the body of the case and 2 the cover or top thereof. Both the body and the top are formed of sections as shown at 3. The middle sections being of channel shape and the end 1922. Serial No. 578,720.
sections being provided with end walls 4C which connect the side walls of the sections together. These end walls form the ends of the case. The sections are connected together by lap joint-s 5. The sections of the top break joint with those ofthe body and the top has a lap joint wit-h t-he body as shown at 6. Each top section has a handle 7 and if desired, the top may be formed of arch shape as shown. The case is preferably constructed of cement or the like so it will not be affected by being buried in the ground.
By this arrangement of parts the case may be easily handled and assembled in the grave and the topl may be put in place after the coflin has been lowered into the body of the case by placing a rope in the handle of each section and lowering the section onto the body. Thus the top may be put in position without difficulty as it is not necessary to lower a heavy slab of concrete as it would be if the top was made in one piece. The parts of the case may be reinforced with steel when necessary and the sections may be cemented together to make a waterproof construction.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 2- A burial vault of the class described comprising a body and a top, each composed of a plurality of sections made of concrete, the middle sections being of channel form and the end sections having end walls, said sections being connected together by lap joints and the top being connected with the body by a lap joint which is formed in the straight abutting edges of the sides and ends of the top and body and handles on the sections of the top so that the top can be put in place a section at a time.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
HERBERT WILLIAM COLLINS.
