Description

' sary.
JOSEPH W. FREEMAN, OF PEEBLES, OHIO.
VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed June 28, 1905. Serial No. 267,352.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. FREEMAN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Peebles, in the county of Adams and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grave-vaults, and is particularly an improvement on or modiiication of the grave vault shown and described in my- Iatent No. 755,866. Said patent shows a cement box open at the bottom and closed at the top, with means in the box to support a casket therein. In the use of the device shown in this patent it is convenient or necessary to place the casket in the vault before the vault is lowered into the grave, and this is objectionable, because the vault is heavy and the services of a considerable number of men or of a derrick is neces- The present invention is designed to obviate these obj ections by making the vault open at the top as well as at the bottom, so that the side walls of the vault can first be placed in the grave and then the casket lowered into it, after which the cover is put in place and cemented to complete the vault.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of the vault. Fig. 2 is avertical cross-section with the cover in place. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cover, and Fig. 4 is a side view thereof detached from the rest of the vault before being put in place.
In the drawings, 6 indicates the side and end walls of the wooden box or lining around which the vault is made. 7 is the wooden lid to this box. The side and end walls 8 of the vault are composed of cement and are 4o molded around the wooden box referred to,
with a rabbet 9 at the top to allow the cover to be fitted down in between the cement walls and upon the top of the wooden box. Two or more steel rods 12 extend across the box to support the casket above the point to which water could rise. The main part of the cement cover l0 is molded in place upon the wooden cover 7 in advance, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that after the cover is put in place it will only remain to run li uid cement around the edge thereof and iii up the rabbet. Handles 11 are conveniently supplied for lowering the cover.
In use the side and end walls of the vault are made and lowered into the grave, and the cover is also molded and located conven-` iently. At the time of the burial the casket is lowered into the vault and upon the supporting-rods. Then the cover is lowered in place and liquid cement is poured around the edges thereof, filling the rabbet and entirely covering the wooden portion of the cover and forming an air and water tight joint and firmly securing the cover in place.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A portable cement grave-vault made in two parts, one comprising a box open at the top and bottom, and the other a cover adapted to be cemented on the box, the box having casket supportimy ,bars extending between the walls thereof above the bottom.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH W. FREEMAN.
