UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHANIEL B. SHALLENBERGER, OF SGOTTDALE, PENNSYLVANIJL.
To all whom it may concern:
nations ofpart-s as will behereinafter described .and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vault embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the vault. Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating the application of the rods for supporting the inner sealing plate; and Fig. 5 is a detail view ota portion of the inner sealing plate. 1
In carrying out my invention, I construct the vault with a body A, a cover B, an inner sealing plate 0, and rods D for supporting the plate 0 within the upper end of the body A as shown. The body A is provided with the upwardly projecting portion having the side plates A and end plates A and is also provided with the outwardly projecting flange E at its base, the said flange being provided in its upper face with a con; tinuous groove F extending entirely around the upwardly projecting portion of the body A, and having its outer wall F tapered inwardly from its upperto its lower edge to form a beveled seat for the lower edge of the depending flange G of the cover B. The upright portion of the body A is provided inthe inner face of its side plates A at their upper ends with notches or grooves a which permit the insertion of the rods D after a casket has been placed in the'body portion, the said rods D extending above the casket and forming a support for the innersealing plate C. This plate 0, like the parts A and B, is preferably of concrete material, and has its edges leaded by a lead strip C, so that when inserted in the upper end of the upwardly projecting portion of the body plate, it will conform closely to and fit snugly therein, aiding in the sealing operation, cement being applied around the edges of the plate 0 and especially to fill the slots or grooves a ,This plate 0 it will be noticed fits down within the upper end of the body portion, and below the upper edges of the plates A and A leaving a recess into which projects the depending central portion B of the cover B, the said cover B being grooved in its under face at B forming the central depending portion B which projects down into the upper portion of the body A, and the depending side flange G fits down over the upwardly projecting portion of the body plate, and projects at its lower edges into the groove F and is beveled on its outer face at its said-lower end at B to Specification of Letters Patent.

coincide with the beveled seat F on the body portion when the parts are applied as shown iii Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The cover is reinforced in practice b a plate H of steel or other suitable metal, embedded therein and extending practically throughout the area of the cover terminating'near the edges thereof, and
provided with threaded openings H into which are threaded screw eyes I through which ropes for lowering the cover may be passed, and these screw eyes I may be removed after the cover is applied.
In the use of my invention, the body portion may be placed in the grave, and the casket lowered thereinto, the rods 1) be applied, and'the inner sealing plate I comprising in its construction a body having an upwardly projecting portion, whose side plates are grooved in their inner faces from their upper ends, and also provided with the outwardly projecting base flange having the groove in its upper face, the outer wall of said groove being tapered forming a beveled seat, supporting rods fitted at their ends in the grooves in the inner faces of the side plates of the body, an inner sealing plate supported on said bars and arranged below the upper edge of the body forming a recess, a marginal edge strip for said sealing plate, a cover fitting on the body portion and having in its lower face a groove receiving the upper edge of the body portion, and forming a central depending portion projecting within the body portion, and an outer depending flange extending down along the outer side of the body portion, and projecting at its lower edge into the groove in the base flange, and tapered on its outer edge to conform to the beveled seat on the base flange, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A burial vault comprising in its construction a: body having an upwardly projecting portion whose inner side walls are formed in flat planes and provided in said flat planes with vertical grooves formed in the upper edges of the said inner side walls, side bars fitting at their ends in said grooves and an inner sealing plate permanently supported on said side bars, substantially as set forth.
3. A burial vault comprising in its construction a body, an inner sealing plate fitting within the upper end of the body and having a. marginal sealing strip to form a sealed joint within the body, and a. cover fitting over the said plate and body, substantially as set forth.
4. A burial vault comprising in its construction a body, having a. base flange grooved in its upper face, and having the outer wall of said groove tapered, forming a beveled seat, and a cover fitting over the body portion, and having :1 depending flange projecting at its lower end into the groove of the base flange, and the beveled seat of the base flange, substantially asset forth. r
5. A burial'vanlt, comprising in its construction a body having a. laterally projecting base flange grooved in its .lpper face, and a cover grooved in its lower face to re- :eive the upperedge of the body, and forming a depending central portion projecting within the body, the said cover being provided with 0. depending rim flange projecting at its lower edge in the groove in the upper face of the base flange, substantially as set forth.
'6. A burial vault, comprising in its construction a body having an upwardly, projecting portion, supporting bars fitted removabiy within the said portion, a sealing plate 10 supported permanently on the said bars and having a marginal sealing strip to form a sealed joint within the body, and a cover, substantiallyas set .forth.
