FRANK ZARLING, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
BU RlAL-TQM B.
SPECIFICATION forming art of Letters Patent no. 712,030, dated October 28, 1902. Application filed January 14, 1902. Serial No. 89,701. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ZARLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Burial- Tomb, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in burialtombs, and relates particularly to hermetically-sealed tombs or cases in which a casket is received prior to being placed in a grave or vault.
The object of my invention is to provide a tomb of suitable waterproof materialsuch as terra-cotta, lead, or the like-and to have the body portion and top provided with coinciding grooves, into which sealing material is poured and by which the said parts are securely locked and sealed.
A further object of my invention is to form the upper surface of the top with beveled or slanting sides and ends to prevent the collection or settling of water or moisture thereon, and a still further object is to provide the said surface with intersecting ribs, the purpose of which will appear in the following specification, and be pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the drawings, in
, which-- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a tomb or casing embodying my improvement with the top shown removed. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same with the top in position, a portion of the sealing material being removed to better show the arrangement of grooves. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken about on the line 4 A of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail view.
In the drawings the body portion A of the casing is represented as made of terra-cotta', but the same may be made of lead or any suitable waterproof material and of such size as the occasion may require. Theupper edges of the sides and ends of the body portion terminate in flanges or enlargements, as shown at A, whose inner faces are provided with a continuous grooved, and adjacent the inner surfaces of the flanges is a shoulder portion a, upon which the top 13 rests. A continuous groove 5 is arranged in the edges of the top B, which is designed to register with the groove in the body portion, as shown in the drawings.
The top B has its upper surface beveled or slanting, as shown at B and B and at the apex of the surfaces B, I arrange a rib or projection b, that runs the entire length of the top, the said surfaces also having arranged thereon a series of ribs 19 that run transversely of the top and. bisect the longitudinal rib b. The transversely-arranged ribs upon either end of the top are apertured, as shown at b for the purpose of inserting hooks D, suspended from a ring or handle D, by which the handling and setting of the top in position are facilitated. After the top has been placed in position it will ofcourse be understood that the hooks are removed.
As shown in the drawings, the top is made of a slightly-smaller diameter than the interior of the flanges A, the purpose being to provide a small space into which the sealing material is poured, which runs into the coinciding recesses in the flanges and top and when hardened forms a solid locking body that not only securely holds the top and-body together, but also forms a compact connection that excludes air and moisture.
After the top has been scaled to the body portion, as above stated, and before the sealing material in the grooves becomes hard a thin layer of cement is placed over the entire surface of the top and preferably covering the ribs and after becoming hard formsa solid body with the material previously placed in the grooves, and by having it cover the ribs on the top the liability of the material beingdisplaced is greatly reduced.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple construction, and the manner of sealing the tomb may be done by any one without requiring a special knowledge of the work. It will be further seen that by providing the top with slanting surfaces and covering them with a layer ofcement I obtain a positively impervious surface, and because of the slanting surfaces no water or moisture is liable to collect, and the durability of the tomb is thus assured.
In order to facilitate the handling of the tomb, I provide the sides with integral lugs C,
which have a perforation 0 arranged in their lower surfaces, that are designed to receive hooks that are attached to ropes and by which the tomb is lowered in the grave.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g In a tomb of the character described the combination of a body portion having its upper edge terminating in a grooved flange, a top having its edges grooved, the said top havingits uppersurface beveled and provided with a longitudinal rib and a series of transverse ribs, the end ribs having apertures arranged therein and adapted for the reception of hooks and perforated lugs arranged upon the sides of the said body portion, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
FRANK Z ARLING.
