UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. MQGAIR, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
TOMB.
Application filed April 21,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. MGGAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tombs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tombs and pertains more particularly to individual tombs for burial purposes.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a tomb which can be easily and quickly erected or assembled after digging of the grave, and to this end briefly embodies a bottom, sides and ends which can be easily and quickly lowered into the grave and properly related, and a top which can be as easily and quickly positioned at the proper time, all of the parts named being formed of reinforced concrete slabs.
Further and other objects will be set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings,
Figure 1, is a side elevation, partly broken away to show the wire mesh reinforcement;
Fig. 2, is a top plan view with the cover removed;
Fig. 3, is a cross section at the center of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the cover or top, showing the under face thereof;
Fig. 5, is a like view of one of the sides; and
Fig. 6, a like view of one of the ends.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, the cover or top and bottom are each formed alike, the bottom 1, having grooves 1 following its contour into which the bottom edges of the sides 2, and the ends 3, are received.
The ends 3, are formed with vertical end tongues 4, flush with the inner faces thereof, while the sides 2, are formed with vertical end grooves 5, which receive the tongues 4, so that there are perfect and true corners formed at each of the adjoining ends of the sides and ends, as depicted in Fig. 2.
The top or cover 6, is formed with a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
1920. 'Serial No. 375,549.
groove 7, which also follows the contour thereof and which receives the top edges of the sides and ends. It will be apparent that the top or cover will thus assist in holding the sides and ends together and that the ends are held by the sides against inward or outward movement. The sides in turn are held against movement by both the top and the bottom.
All of the parts are formed of poured or molded concrete, reinforced by wire mesh as indicated at 8.
In operation, after digging of the grave, the bottom is lowered thereinto in the position shown in Fig. 1, after which the sides and ends are lowered and assembled in the position shown in Fig. 2, the final step being lowering of the top into the position of Fig. 1, after placement of the casket in the vault or tomb so formed.
Thus, individual, simple and economical tombs or vaults are provided, which can be easily and quickly erected and which represent a material saving in time, labor and expense as compared with the more or less general custom of building a structure of brick or stone with use of mortar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a tomb, a bottom member having side and end grooves on its upper face, side and end members entirely seated at their lower ends in the grooves, the end members having vertical tongues flush with the inner faces thereof, the side members having vertical grooves receiving the tongues, a cover having side and end grooves entirely receiving the top edges of the side and end members so that the said cover will extend down over a portion of the inside and outside of said side and end members, thereby holding the same in locked position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN F. McGAIR.
