Description

L. BUTTON.
Burial-Case.
No. 202,797. Patented April 23, 1878..
MPEI'ERS. PMOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, n C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEAN'DER K. DUTTON, OF OSKALOOSA, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURlAL-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,797, dated April 23, 1878; application filed March 21, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnnnnnn K. DUTTON, of Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Vaults; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which wi.l enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- I Figure 1 is a top plan. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements in burial caskets or vaults, consisting of a metallic shell, having a filling of cement or artificial stone, substantially. as hereinafter more fully shown and described. I
In the drawings, A is the body of the vault or casket, consisting of a metallic box, tapering toward the bottom, and having at its upper edge a ridge, a, bent outwardly, and serving principally as a stifl'ener. To the inside of the box are secured beveled or bent strips 12 b, and it is filled with a lining of cement an inch or more in thickness. The cement is deposited while plastic, and is, when hardened, retained in position by the strips 1) b. A V- shaped groove, 0, is formed in the upper edge of the cement lining.
B is the arched cover, which consists, like the box A, of a metallic shell, having a lining of artificial stone, retained in position by strips d d. The edge of the artificial-stone lining forms a V-shaped ridge, 6, which fits in the groove 0. The cover B is provided with handles f f, so that it may easily be removed or placed in position, as may be required.
The advantages of my invention will be I readily seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. After depositing the body in the casket, cement is placed in the groove 0, when, by placing the cover in position, it is hermetically and automatically sealed.
The ridge a affords a substantial hold for carrying the casket, and the cover may be easily manipulated by the handles secured thereto.
Owing to the strips b b, the metallic shell cannot spring out from the stone lining, but Will at all times remain in its original shape,
and present a neat and finished appearance.
The metallic shell may, of course, be painted or covered with cloth, &c., whenever such ornamentation is found desirable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. As an improvement in burial vaults or caskets, the metallic shell A, having outwardly-bent ridges a a, and cement or artificialstone lining, having at the top a V-shaped groove, 0, in combination with the arched cover, consisting of a shell, the cement or artificial-stone lining of which is provided with a V-shaped ridge, 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a burial vault or casket consisting of a metallic shell having a lining of artificial stone, the beveled or bent strips b b, attached permanently to the metallic shell, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEANDER K. DUTTON.
