SEDTIONAL COPING FOR GRAVES.

Beitknown that I ,EDWARD T. OWEN, acitizen of the United States;` residing at Vanwert, in the county of Decatur' and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Sectional Coping for Graves, of which the following is a specification.

My object is to provide an improved copingl forgraves by forming sections in molds and combiningfastening devices with the sections in such a manner that the sections can be secu rely and detachably connected and the fastening devices covered and concealed when the sections are united as required in practical use.

My invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a top of one of my copings formed in four pieces detachably connected. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing ends of two pieces connected and fastening devices on their other ends adapted for connecting them with mating pieces to produce a complete coping, as shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatical view of a piece of flat plate metal for making a hook adapted to be fastened in the end of a piece of coping, as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a hook formed complete from a single piece shaped as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view showing how two parts of a coping are connected at their abutting ends by means of hooks and eyes partially embedded in the ends of the sections of coping.

Each one of the four sections of coping is elbow-shaped, and their longest portions AV produce the parallel sides and their shorter portions B the ends of the complete coping. They are artificial stone made of sand and cement in suitable molds and may vary in size and ornamental finish as desired, and connected by means of hooks and eyes formed of metal and fixed thereto as shown or in any suitable way, so the metal fastening devices will be concealed when the sections are connected, as shown in Fig. l.

C is a metal plate, from which a central portion D of one end is cut loose, so it can be bent into shape, as shown in Fig. 4, to produce a rearward extension or arm adapted to be placed in a mold and embedded in the end of a section, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 and as required for securely fixing the hook to a section of coping. The other portion of the same end of the plate O is also bent downward, as shown in Fig. 4, to produce a hook II, and the other end bent rearward to produce an arm J, that is also adapted to be embedded in the composition shaped in the mold to produce a section of coping. One end of each section is thus provided with a fixed hook and its other end with an eye or loop P, embedded and fastened therein, as shown in Fig. 5 or in any suitable way, to be adapted to admitthe hook Il.

It is obvious sections of coping thus formed and adapted/to be detachably connected can be more readily handled and carried about and placed in position over a grave or around a flower-bed more advantageously than when fastened together by extraneous devices that are visible and objectionable.

The faces of each end of each section extend at right angles from their bottom faces and are adapted to contact with each other from top to bottom as'required to be closely and detachably connected to two abutting ends by means of metal fastening devices enr bedded in the ends, to be entirely concealed when the ends of two sections are fixed together.

Having thus described the purpose and construction and combination of the different parts of my invention, its practical utility Will be readily understood by persons familiar with theart to which it pertains, and what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A coping for graves formed in sections in molds and the end faces of each section extended at right angles from its bottom face and metal fastening devices fixed in the abutting ends of the sections in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.

2. In a coping for graves, a section having vertical faces at its ends, a metal hook fixed in one end and a metal eye in the other end, in combination with a mating section also having a metal hook in one end and a metal' IOO loop in the other end as required to detachably fasten the abuttingends together in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.

3. In a coping for graves,-a hook formed V5 from a single piece of pla-te metal cut and bent at right angles at one end to produce an arm, a central part out loose from the other end and bent at right angles to produce an arm and the same end portion of the plate bent downward to produce a hook, incomb- 1o nation with the end of a section of coping, as shown and described for the purposes stated.
