UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST W. H. WEBER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN M. SPENCER AND BERTIIA M. SPENCER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
ANCHOR AND BASE-PLATE FOR LAWN SWINGS, BENGHES, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Application led April 21, 1908. Serial No. 428,391.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST W. I-I. IVEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchors and Base-Plates for Lawn Swings, Benches, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an anchor base plate for lawn swings, benches and the like; and the object of the invention is to provide means whereby the ends of the legs of lawn swings, benches and like articles will be protected against premature decay by keeping them removed from the ground.
A further object of the invention, in addition to protecting the ends of the legs of lawn swings, benches from premature decay, is to providea suitable anchor whereby the shifting of the swings, and benches is prevented.
I accomplish the` objects of my invention by means of the anchor base-plate illustrated in the accompanying drawings, fori'ning a part hereof, in which-q I Figure l is a perspective view of a lawn swing showing my invention in operating position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the anchor base-plates, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the construction shown in Fig. 2. Fig. l is a longitudinal sectionalvview of the construction shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings, l represents the plate, usually composed of metal, which forms the base or support for the legs of the swings, benches, etc. The plate l is provided on its under siilrface with the prongs or fingers 2 adapted to be driven into the ground. These prongs retain the plates in the position in which they are placed and prevent them from skidding across the ground or lawn. The plates 1 are provided on their upper surfaces with a rib or similar barrier 3 to abut the outer sides of the legs and thus form an obstruction for retaining the legs of the swings, benches, etc., in position, and thereby preventing them from spreading. The legs of the supported articles thus supported upon the surfaces of the plates keep the ends from contacting the ground and thus prevent premature decay.
The swings and benches are further secured to the plates by means of the ears l0, formed of malleable iron, which are set into the mold before the plates 1 are cast. The ears when made of malleable iron enable them to be bent so as to conform to the angle in which the leg approaches the plate l, and by means of screws or similar devices passing through the screw holes 11 the legs may rigidly be secured to the plates. This fastening is desirable in public parks or like places where the swings and benches receive rough usage in being pulled about.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An anchor base-plate for lawn swings, benches andlike articles consisting of a supporting plate, prongs on said plate to engage the ground and prevent skidding of said plate, a {iange on the face of said plate to abut and prevent displacement of the swing and bench legs from said plate, and ears composed of flexible material embedded in said plates and adapted to bend against the legs, and means for rigidly securing the ears and legs together.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana.
AUGUST W. 1i. WEBER. [1.. s]
