PATENTED MAR. 14. 1905.
wb .E SV DA WK G K. 0R I0 RF hU UN H 0 G 2 TM 5 8 0 N YAPPLIGATION FILED NOV.17, 1504.
UNITED STATES Patented March 14, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM O. JAMISON, OF SEYMOUR, IOWA.
COPING FOR GRAVES.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,072, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed November 17, 1904. Serial No. 233,233.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. RIoxoRDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seymour, in the county of Wayne and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Building-Block and Coping for Graves, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a block made of sand and cement or other suitable concrete IO and specially adapted to be used in coping for graves and also adapted to be advantagegpsly used as a building-block in forming wa s.
A further object is to provide open-ended I5 chambers in the block adapted to be filled with ground for planting flowers and shrubbery therein and also adapted to produce a hollow wall when used for building purposes. My invention consists in a block shaped as 20 hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view that shows the shape of the block. Fig. 2 is an end view 2 5 of two of the blocks interlocked, as required, to bind them together when used as a coping for a grave or when laid up in a wall. Fig. 3 is a top view of a block provided with a chamber and in combination with another will pro- 0 duce four chambers. Fig. 4 is a perspective view that shows two mating blocks combined, as required in practical use.
The numeral designates the straight solid portion of the block, and 12 lateral pro- 3 5 jections at its ends, that terminate in hooks 13. Cavities 14, that may vary in size and shape, are formed between the center 15 and the projections 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and a cavity 16 may also be formed in the 4o central portion, as shown in Fig. 3, to produce open chambers and to reduce the weight of the block and the quantity of material required for making it.
It is obvious the blocks may be made of sand and cement or other suitable material 45.
in suitable molds and vary in size, as desired.
By connecting two of the blocks, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, a complete coping for graves is produced, or building-block.
It will be observed by connecting or contacting the centers. 15 of two mating blocks a building-block is produced that is adapted for building a wall and laying the meeting ends of two blocks upon the centers of the blocks in a lower row, so that the blocks in a wall will bebound at their centers as well as at their ends and greatly advantageous when long blocksare used for making walls.
Having thus set forth the purpose of my invention and the manner of its construction and use, the practical utility thereof will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains. 7
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A block having lateral extensions at its ends terminating in hooks, cavities between said extensions and the center for producing open-ended chambers, for the purposes stated.
2. Two mating blocks, each having lateral 7o extensions at its ends terminating in hooks,
cavities between said lateral extensions and the hooks interlocked as shown and described, for the purposes stated.
3. A block composed of two mating parts, each having lateral projections at its ends terminating in hooks, cavities between said projections and the center and a cavity in its central portion and the two parts detachably connected by means of the hooks, for the purposes stated.
