IMPROVEMENT IN ARTIFICIAL-STONE TOMB S OR VAULTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,090, dated December 30, 1879; application filed I October 18, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. ARNOLD, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial-Stone Tombs and Vaults; and I do hereby declare thefollow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in artificial-stone tombs; and it has for its object to provide such tombs with a cheap and durable inscription-tablet, which will form a component part of the tomb, and which will be ornamental in appearance and will be virtually indestructible from ordinary atmospheric influences.

To this end my invention consists in a tomb constructed of plastic material, with a recess for the coffin or casket containing the corpse, and having embodied in its top a metallic inscri 'ition-plate and a surmounting protectingplate of transparent material, the edges at the top surrounding the ii'iscription-plate being inclined downwardly from the same, so as to shed water, as more fully hereinafter speci- :fied.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved tomb, and Fig. 2 a Vertical section thereof.

The letter A indicates the body of the tomb,

sealed, so as to be unaffected by atmospheric influences.

The inscription-tablet is preferably composed of sheet-zinc, and the inscription is formed thereon by means of dies or by engraving or printing. The sides of the top of the tomb surrounding the inscription-tablet and its protective plate are beveled from said plate outwardly in a downward direction, so as to shed water, and prevent any possibility of the same finding its way to said inscriptiolrtablet.

In constructing my improved tomb a mold of suitable shape is employed, and the protecting-plate and inscription-tablet are properly placed therein. A proper core is then inserted and hydraulic cement or other self-setting cement, properly combined with water, is poured in or otherwise placed in the spaces between the mold and core, and the whole is left undisturbed until the cement has properly set, when the tomb may be removed, the tablet and projecting plate being incorporated with it, and forming part of the same.

I am aware that monuments have been formedof artificial stone and tablets embedded therein, and such I do not desire to claim, broadly.

Having thus described my iiwention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A tomb constructed of plastic material, with a recess to lighten the weight or serve as a receptacle for a coffin or casket, and having embodied in its top an inscription plate or tablet and a transparent protecting-plate, the parts surrounding said plate being inclined downwardly to shed water, substantially as specified.
