My invention relates to a grave mark, and has for its object to provide an inexpensive device of the kind, that is imperishable, and by which .the remains of any person buried in a grave may be identified, after all external marks or monuments have been obliterated, displaced, or destroyed. i
'I accomplish these objects by constructing a grave mark as hereinafter described and illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention with the anchor block removed, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line x-x of Fig. 1, with the anchor block attached. I 4
In the drawings 1 represents a slab, which may be made of natural stone, of any suitable size and shape,
but which is preferably concrete, molded in the desired form, with suitable metal reinforcements 2 embedded in the concrete, by which a slab, of less thickness and weight ismade strong and durable. Or it may be made of any other imperishable material molded or shaped to the desired form.
The slab 1 is provided with a rectangular recess 3* on one side, of suitable dimensions to closely receive a record tablet l. The body of'the tablet 4 is formed of a glass plate 5 adapted to closely fit into the cavity.- Upon the inner face of the tablet is mounted, by suitable transparent adhesive material the single letters 6 necessary to form the name, date of birth, date of death, and such other record as desired, of the indi- -vidual whose remains and grave it is intended to identify. The letters 6 are formed of non-corrosive sheet metal, or other imperishable material, and after the letters are attached to the plate, the back or inner side of the tablet thus formed is coated with asphaltum or other suitable impervious and imperishable mate- Specification of Letters Patent.

The tablet is preferably secured in the recess of the slab by non-corrosive bolts 7 extending through suitable orifices 8 formed in the plate 5. These bolts, when the slab is molded, may be embedded in the material of which the slab isformed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, or registering orifices in the plate and slab may be formed to receive the bolts which are secured by a suitable nut 9. The mark, thus constructed, is preferably buried with the casket in the grave, as a certain and additional means oi identification, in the event of all external marks or monuments becoming in time displaced, defaced, or destroyed, or in the event of the abandonment or removal of a cemetery, which the march of improvements and growth of cities and towns sometimes makes necessary.
A mark thus constructed is made adapted for use as an external monument by elongating the slab and providing it with'the transverse slot 10, at the end opposite the record tablet, to receive a retaining bar '11, which being inserted through the slot and embedded horizontally, at a suitable depth to expose the tablet above the ground; securely anchors the slab and prevents its displacement. The anchor bar may also be constructed of concrete suitably reinforced with metal, whereby the anchor bar is made strong and lasting.
What I claim to be new is v A gravemark, comprising a metal reinforced concrete slab provided with a recess. and a tablet embedded in the recess in hardening impervious material, and secured by non'corrosive bolts partly embedded in the slab and partly extending through orifices in the tablet, the tablet comprisinc; :1 glass plate having secured thereto on its inner face non-corrosive letter and figure bodies forming an inscription.
