Description

R. MoOULLY. PORTABLE BATH TUB.
No. 88,054; I Patented Mar. 23, 1869.
[fir/visas: Q hum/ram %%M m mm mm IROBERTMCCULLIY, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent No. 88,054, dated March 23, 1869.
mnovsn PORTABLE BATH-m.
The Schedule refund to in these Letter Patent and making put of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -ROBERT- McOULLY, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Portable Bath-Tub; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing,- forming a part of this specification. n The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a flexible and thoroughly water-proof detach-- able lining, with-a portable box or fiame, whose ends, sides, and bottom-pieces may be readily separated and detached for the purposes of transportation.
In the accompanying drawing A A'represent the sides and ends of my outer box or frame.
These sides and ends are each made separate and distinct from the other, and so constructed and fitted with hooks, a a, or with mortise-andvtenon joints, or other devices, as that they may be readily and securely fitted and fastened together, andas readily taken apart. When fitted and fastened together, as illustrated in the drawing, they constitute the outer structure of my improved bath-tub. This outer structure may be left bottomless, as illustrated in the drawing, or the bottom may be closed by slats, or by solid boards, united to the [sides and ends by pins and sockets, or other suitable detachable fastenings.
In ordinary use, I find that no bottom-piece is required, for when the outer structure of my improvedbath-tub is set up, a bottom is supplied thereto by the floor, upon which it rests, sufficient for my purpose.
, Having thus formed the outer portion of the tub, I complete it by placing therein an inner lining, B, of close, heavy Indiaprubber cloth, so formed as to fit closely and neatly within the enolosing-frameA, and
The boards or rrame A A, forming the sides of the tub, may be cushioned, or faced with a sofi. lining on the inner surface thereof; and I also contemplate pla-,
cing a. mattress, D, in the bottom of the frame, whenit is put together, so that one end shall extend up upon the sloping upper end of the tub, as illustrated in'the drawing.
Thus I obtain a bath-tub especially adapted. for imvalids, and peculiarly usefulifor the sick-room. It may be readily can'ied and set up in aroom, close by the patients couch, and the patient may recline therein with as much ease and comfort as upon his bed. It can be readily and quickly emptied, and removed, and packed away in a very small space.
- Having fully described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, as herein described, of ,a single flexible water-proof inner lining, with an outer box or frame, composed of detachable side and end-pieces, the whole constituting a portable bath-tub, specially adapted for inyalids, as herein set forth, as an article of manufacture.
The foregoing specification of my improved portable bath-tub signed by me, this 21st day of January, .1869.
p ROBT M0OULLY.
