Be it known that I, HANS CHRIST HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap-Robes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to lap-robes, the ob ject in view being toprovide a lap-robe designed particularly for use in very cold climates in Vehicles of all descriptions.

With the ordinary lap-robe at present in use it is a difficult matter to prevent the cold air from getting under the robe and chilling the occupants of the vehicle. With the improved construction hereinafter described the feet, knees, and limbs of the occupants of the vehicle are entirely inclosed and encased in the lap-robe, which passes beneath as Well as over the knees and limbs.

The invention also contemplates means whereby one section of the lap-robe may be partly or wholly detached from the other section, so as to allow the occupants to step into or out of the robe, and also embodies means whereby thevrobe as a whole is retained in place and anchored to the seat or seat-cushion of the vehicle.

The detailed objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear in the course of the subjoined description.

The invention consistsin a lap-robe embodying certainnovel features and details of construction, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lap-robe constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the robe and also through a sufficient portion of a vehicle to illustrate the manner of securing the laprobe to the seat-cushion. section taken horizontally through the laprobe when in condition for use.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen Fig. 3 is a crossthat the lap-robe contemplated in this invention is composed of two sections, 1 designating the inner or underneath section, and 2 the.

outer or knee-coverin g section. The material of which the two sections is formed is optional and may be varied according to existing conditions or requirements of the climate. The lap-robe may, for instance, be composed of heavy cloth, woolen blankets, fur, or any material which will effectively retain the heat and prevent the entrance of cold between the two sections or into the interior of the bag or casing formed thereby. The inner or main section is somewhat wider and longer than the knee-covering section, and the latter is connected at its bottom edge to the inner section 1, preferably at a point above the lower edge of the latter, by means of a series of fasteners, preferably in the form of straps and buckles 3. It also has attached to it near its lower edge a flexible strap 4, which forms a handle for carrying the lap-robe either when folded or unfolded. The main section 1 is extended considerably at its upper end beyond the corresponding end of the outer or knee-covering section 2, thereby forming an extension or flap 5, which is designed to be interposed between the seat and seat-cushion, so that the lap-robe as a whole is held in place by the weight of the seat-cushion and by the additional weight of the occupants placed thereon. The section '1 is also provided at its opposite upper corners with adjustable straps or loops 6, which may be passed around the seat-cushion (indicated at 7) or connected to the side rails of the vehicle-seat. This construction enables the lap-robe to be securely retained in proper position at all times. The outer or knee-covering section 2 is also secured along its longitudinal edges to the main section 1 by means of series of fasteners 8, preferably in the form of snap-hooks, which are attached to one of the sections and adapted to be snapped into engagement with a corresponding series of rings or eyes 9, attached to the other section. The two parts of the fastening devices are preferably secured to the two sections of the lap-robe by means of short leather straps 10, though they may be secured in any desired or preferred manner. The fasteners are secured to the knee-coverin g section 2 at points reniotefrom the extreme edges of said section, so as to leave flaps or extensions 11, which lie against the front surfaces of the section 1 and may be tucked under the limbs of the occupant, thus making a tight joint between the two sections of the lap-robe and excluding the cold air.

The improved lap robe hereinabove described has been illustrated in its simplest form in the drawings; but it will be apparent that an ornamental border may be applied to one or both sections of the robe, and any other desired ornamentation or finish may be imparted to the robe, without in any way departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In applying the robe about the limbs of the occupant or occupants of the vehicle it is not necessary to detach or loosen all of the fastening devices along one side of the lap-robe, but merely three or four of such fasteners or as many as may be necessary to permit a free entrance and exit. After the occupants of the vehicle are seated the section 2 of the robe may be quickly connected to the section 1 by snapping the hooks into engagement with the-rings or eyes on the other section. The construction described, while admitting of the ready entrance and exit of the occupants of the vehicle, also excludes cold air and retains the heat within the space between the two sections of the device.

\Vhen not in use, the lap-robe may be rolled into a compact bundle and the straps orloops at the upper end thereof may be used for securing the bundle in compact form, and the strap or handle at the bottom of the bag may be left exposed and used for conveniently carrying the bundle. 7

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

1. A lap-robe comprising upper and lower sections detachably connected, the lower section being longer and forming a flap adapted to be inserted and held between a vehicle v seat and cushion, substantially as described.

2. A lap-robe, composed of two sections, the outer or knee-covering section having fasteners secured along the opposite sides thereof at points remote from the extreme side edges and designed to engage complemental fasteners attached to the main or lower section, the construction adapting the two sections to be partly or wholly disconnected and providing side flaps on the outer or knee-covering section which extend partially across the lower section, substantially as and for the purpose described.
