\ CAR SEAT REST AND FIRE ESCAPE.
No. 324,839. Patented Aug. 25, 1885'.
UNITED STATES EDWVARD H. HAZEN, OF DAVENPORT, IO\VA.
CAR-SEAT REST AND FIRE ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,839, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed October 20, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. HAZEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful GarSeat Rest and Fire-Escape Combined, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the rest attached to the two car-seats. Fig. 2 shows the rest laid out flat. Fig. 3 shows it done up in a con venient form for carrying, with pillow and shawl inside. Figs. 4 and 5 show devices for fastening the rest to the seats.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th rou ghout the several views.
A is the rest, made of any flexible material,
and extending from the bottom of one can,
seat to the top of the back of the seat in front, as shown in Fig. 1. B is a pocket to receive the pillow 0 when not in use, and D is another pocket used as a receptacle for small articles when the rest is rolled up, as shown in Fig. 3.
The lower end of the rest is fastened to the frame-work of the seat by hooks E. These hooks are turned sidewise, as shown at E, by means of the thumbbutton F, mounted in a bar, F, having a handle, F similar toa shawl-strap bar and handle, said bar being also provided with the usual binding-straps, F The thumb-button F allows the hooks to pass more easily between the cushion of the seat and back. When the hooks are pushed down far enough, they are turned back in position by the said thumb-button F,when they will take hold of the frame of the seat. hooks F are made broad at the top, so that the pressure of the upholstery against them will keep them in position. The hooks E are hinged at the top, and will turn up, as shown by dotted lines, for convenience in carrying when the rest is rolled up.
The upper end of the rest is fastened by passing two straps, G G, down the back of the seat, near the lower end of each of which straps is a fastening, (shown in Fig. 5,) which is hinged at a, so that it can be folded, as indicated by the dotted lines, so as to be easily passed between the cushions. On. the hinge a is a shoulder, I), like any ordinary stop-hinge,
These (No model.)
which prevents the catch from opening any farther than is shown in the drawings. After the catch is passed between the seat and back it is opened out, as shown, so that the lower half will take hold of the bottom of the back of the seat. The rest can then be adjusted by sliding these catches up or down on the straps G G. WVhen the catch is opened, the choke-tongue G presses against the strap and holds it securely wherever placed.
This car-seat rest ismade of one continuous narrow strip folded over at the ends and re turned back and forth, as shown in Fig. 2, and sewed together, so that it can be readily ripped up and again be made one long piece,
' to be used as a fire-escape.
My car-seat rest may be made of cloth, canvas, webbing, leather, or any other material or combination of materials.
\Vhen arranged as shown in Fig. 1,thenser can rest upon his side with his head upon the cushion, either in its pocket at the upper end of the rest or against the wall of the car, as shown in said figure, while his feet are upon the seat at its outer end, or various other positions may be assumed. As afire-escape the rest is parted along its seams, so as to consti tute a continuous strip,whicl1 can be used as a rope or strap in descending from the window of a building, the adjustable clamping device being employed as a friction device while the user is making his descent.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A car-seat rest consisting of a flexible body portion provided at one end with a bar having a handle and binding-straps, and at taehing-hooks mounted in said bar, and at the other end with straps, and adj ustably mounted attaching devices, substantially as specified.
2. In a car-seat rest, the combination of a flexible body portion and a rigid cross-bar having bindingstraps and a handle withpi'v oted hinged attaching-hooks, whereby the entirerest is capable of being rolled and secured in a convenient package, substantially as specified. V
8. A carseat rest made of one continuous narrow strip returned back and forth and sewed or fastened together,to be easily ripped apart and converted into. a fire-escape, sub- 5. The folding catch, with thehingea, shoulstantially as described. der b, and choke-tongue O, substantially as 4. The device for fastening the lower end described.
of the rest to the seat, said device consisting 5 of the hookE, hinged at the top, combined Witnesses:
with the thumb button F, substantially as B. W. GARTsIDE,
set forth. F. L. DODGE.
