v iwwwy-vxl INVENTOR. HARRY H. GOLDBERG ATTORNEYS United States Patent BABY BLANKET GARMENT Harry H. Goldberg, Malden, Mass.
Application September 18, 1952, Serial No. 310,302
Claims. (Cl. 269.5)
The invention relates to a novel baby blanket garment adapted to hold and protect a baby with superior freedom, security and comfort. The garment more particularly embodies a blanket in conjunction with a bag for holding the baby at the bottom face of the blanket. The bag is preferably constructed of waterproof fabric of a character to give desired warmth and comfort and is provided with draw strings for closing its mouth onto the baby beneath its arms. The baby is thus securely enclosed in the bag and since the bag is preferably constructed independently of the blanket means is provided for carrying the bag with the baby therein on the bottom face of the blanket.
The blanket is provided with two arm holes and constnlcted to hold the mouth of the bag adjacent to these holes whereby the bady can rest comfortably under the blanket while supported in the bag. The bag is furthermore so disposed on the blanket that the blanket can be folded laterally and upwardly to form a protective carrying cradle about the baby. The production of an improved baby blanket garment embodying these features comprises a primary object of the invention.
These and other objects and features of my invention hereinafter described will be more readily understood and appreciated from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my novel blanket garment on a baby in its crib,
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the blanket folded to form a carrying cradle about the baby,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the blanket,
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the blanket and bag,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the bag, and
Fig 6 is a bottom plan view showing a baby in the bag on the blanket.
In the drawings 10 indicates a baby blanket having ties 12 for securing the corners of the blanket to the crib and having two arm holes 14 through the blanket below its top margin. A baby receiving bag 16 is provided at its margin wtih a zipper element 18 for cooperating with a zipper element 20 secured U-shaped to the bottom face of the blanket and with its open mouth adjacent to the arm holes and top margin of the blanket. The bag is preferably made detachable from the blanket and the zipper elements serve these attaching and detaching functions. The mouth of the bag is also provided with draw strings 22 for closing the mouth onto the baby beneath its arms.
The bag is constructed of waterproof fabric which can be flannelized rubber or the like for providing warmth, or rubberized silk or the like for summer protection. Air vents 24 are formed adjacent to the mouth end of the bag. The detachable and waterproof bag provides a protective container for the baby and can be removed and cleansed independently of the blanket.
When using the garment the bag is zippered to the blanket and the baby is placed in the bag with arms extending through the holes 14. The draw strings 22 are then tightened to close the mouth of the bag onto the baby beneath its arms. The baby is placed in the crib as shown in Fig. 1 and the blanket tied to the crib by the corner ties 12. The garment thereupon serves to support the baby with perfect freedom for movement but without permit- 2,702,385 Patented Feb. 22, 1955 ting him to creep out or slide down in the bag. The bag also provides wet-proof protection whether the baby is in in the crib, carriage or being carried in the arms.
To allow for varying size and growth of babies, the blanket is provided with cooperating snap fasteners 28 on the top face of the blanket at its side and top margins for securing the top portion of the blanket in folded relation onto the portion at the mouth of the bag from the position of Figs. 1 and 3 to the position of Fig. 6. The blanket is also foldable rearwardly about the bag on the lines 30 and then rearwardly and upwardly about the line 32 to form the protective carrying cradle shown in Fig. 2.
It will now be apparent that I have produced a superior baby blanket garment which is adapted to support a baby with complete freedom and without danger of injury. The bag also retains the baby without danger of wetting or soiling the blanket or other means supporting the bag. Also, while in the drawings I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that various modifications and changes within the scope of the appended claims are possible, such for example as supporting the bag on the blanket by any convenient means as by buttons or in a pocket in the blanket.
Having thus disclosed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A baby blanket garment comprising a blanket, a baby receiving bag secured to the bottom face of the blanket with the open mouth of the bag adjacent to the top margin of the blanket, the blanket having two arm holes therethrough at the mouth of the bag, and draw strings carried by the bag and blanket at the mouth of the bag, and adjacent to the arm holes for confining the bag mouth to a baby beneath its arms.
2. A baby blanket garment comprising a blanket having two spaced arm holes therethrough adjacent to its top margin, a baby receiving bag, means for closing the mouth of the bag onto a baby, and means including cooperating elements carried by the blanket and bag for detachably attaching the bag to the bottom face of the blanket with its mouth adjacent to said arm holes.
3. A baby blanket garment comprising a blanket, a baby receiving bag, a flexible zipper element attached U- shaped to the bottom face of the blanket with its open mouth adjacent to the top margin of the blanket, and a cooperating zipper element on the side and bottom margin of the bag for detachably attaching the bag to the blanket.
4. The baby blanket garment defined in claim 3 in which the bag comprises a waterproof fabric and the blanket has two spaced arm holes therethrough adjacent to said open mouth, and draw strings for confining the bag mouth to a baby beneath its arms and between said arm holes.
5. A baby blanket garment comprising a blanket, a baby receiving bag secured to the bottom face of the blanket substantially within the top half of the blanket and spaced a substantial distance from its side and bottom margins and with the open mouth of the bag adjacent to the top margin of the blanket, the blanket having two spaced arm holes therethrough adjacent to its top margin, and means at the mouth of the bag and between the arm holes for holding a baby in the bag, the side portions of the blanket being foldable rearwardly over the baby and intermediate portion of the blanket and the bottom portion with folded sides being foldable rearwardly and upwardly over the baby to form a protective carrying cradle.
