SANITARY MATTRESS. No. 468,353; Patented Peb. 9, 1892.
n er 4444/1 f UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH MAUSSNER, OF NREMBERG, ASSIGNOR-TO FREDERIC OCI-IS, OF FUERTII, GERMANY.
SANITARYl MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part f Letters Patent No. 468,353, dated February .9, 1892.
` Application led Uctuber 26, 1891. Serial No. 409,812. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH MAUssNER, a subject of the King of Bavaria, in the German Empire, 'and a resident of the city` of Nuremberg, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, German-y, have invented certain new and' useful Improvements in Sanitary Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sanitary mattresses for children and sick persons who are not able to hold the urine while sleeping and are in consequence thereof liable to catch severe colds while resting on a Wet sheet of rubber or blanket with parts of their body exposed during cold nights. p'
My invention consists in a combination of parts by means of which the moisture isremoved from the surface nearest to the body by being absorbed by a porous sheet at the bottom of the mattress, the whole being inclosed in a cup-shaped water-tight' casing, from which it can be easily removed.v
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure l is a section through the sanitary mattress. Fig.V `E2 is a plan view of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
For the main part of the mattress I select a bolster or thick mat m, made of horse-hair or similar fibrous material loosely interwoven by hand ormachin'e, at the bottom of which I place a blanket-c, of felt or similar moisture-absorbingl material, and inclose both in a quilt I), which is made of thin and looselywoven textile fabric and cut in a peculiar disk-like shape corresponding to the shape of the bolster, covering its entire upper surface, and after extending downward, covering the sides of both the bolster m and the felt blanket c, is drawn in by bending-strips b', overlapping the lfour sides of the mat m and felt blanket c, till they touch the bottom of the blanket c, and then connect them at the overlapping four corners by sewing or cementing them together, thus holding the mat m and blanket c together, yet allowing their easy removal through the open space left through the rim b. This combination. is inserted into a casing of rubber cloth a or similar material formed in a similar manner as the quilt b, with an overlapping rim a', in
such a manner that rim b is placed at the opposite 'side of the mattress from the rim a', or the open side of the quilt b is turned downward, while the open side of the rubbercloth casing a. is turned upward,as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In applying my invention the mattress is placed into a bed in the manner described, with the open side of the rubber casing turned upward.- Thin bed -cloth`ing, if any, is spread thereover and is thus made ready for use. The urine emitted will easily pass through the thin quilt b and mat fm. and will be gradually absorbed by the underlying porousstrip c, and will be retained therein, the rubber-cloth casing preventing its spreading beyond and wetting the slats and the door, thus keeping the child restingr upon the mattress almost dry when compared with they common custom, Where the directly underlying sheet of rubber cloth prevents the escapement of the urine and will keep the child .thus affected frequently wet, thus breeding disease. It is evident that the casing b could be omitted and the felt strip c placed separate into the rubber casing d and casing b inclose the mat m alone, if desired.
All the parts of these sanitary mattresses can be easily separated, cleaned, ordried and readily put together again., f
This mattress is especially adapted to use in all cases of surgical or medical operations where liquoids of any kind are liable to be spilt, as in bathing or Washing the body or limbs or Where there' is danger of hemorrhage at night, &c.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a sanitarymattress, of the mat an with the porous sheet c, the open-fabric casing b, having the rim b', and the impervious casing a, having the rim al, as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
2. In a sanitary mattress, the combination of the mat fm. with the porous sheet c and the impervious casing a, having the rim a',
as and for the purposes herein shown and set roo forth.
Signed at Fuerth, in the Kingdom of Bavaria and Empire of Germany, this 7th day of October, A. D. 1891.
FRIEDRICH MAUSSNER.
