Description

{No Model.)
B. 0. YOUNG.
SPRING BED.
Patented Dec. 1, 1885 WITNESSES 06; 8M 9W7."
Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT ROBERT CLAYTON YOUNG, OF DUN, KANSAS.
SPRING-BED.
5PBCIPICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,599, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed May 5, 1885. Serial No. 164,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT OAYOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dun, in the county of \Vilson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Spring-Beds; and I d 0 hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to spring-beds; and it consists in suspending the side rails which support the ends of the slats from spiral springs secured at their upper ends to a stationary rail affixed to the side pieces of the bedstead, the said spring-supported rails being provided on that side which is contiguous to the side piece of the bedstead with rubber cushions, which serve to prevent noise, and also reduce the friction between the said rails and the side pieces of the bedstead.
Referring to the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of that side of the spring-supported rail to which the rubber cushions are secured. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by line 00 m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification of my invention, and Fig. 5 is a view on the line 3 y of Fig. 1.
The same letters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A represents the side piece of a bedstead, to the inner side of which is rigidly secured the rail B, for convenience in connecting the movable rail 0 to the side piece of the bedstead.
O indicates one of the two movable rails which support the ends of the slats D, each of said rails being placed. below a fixed rail, B, and connected thereto by means of strong spiral springs, c, of which six or eight are preferably employedfor each rail.
On that side of the movable rail which is contiguous to the side piece of the bedstead is secured the rubber cushions 0, which serve to prevent the noise which would otherwise be caused by the said rail rubbing against the (No model.)
sideA of the bedstead, and which also serves to reduce the frictional points, and thereby cause the rails O to move more easily than they would otherwise.
If desired, the movable rails may be placed above the fixed rails B, and supported thereon by the spiral springs, as shown in the modification, Fig. 4:, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my invention will be readily understood without requiring further explanation.
It will be seen that by the use of my invention, which is simple in construction, and therefore inexpensive to manufacture and not liable to get out of order, the use of a springmattress can be dispensed with, as the springsupported rails which support the ends of the slats furnish that ease and comfort in use which has heretofore been obtainable only through the use of a spring-mattress.
I am aware that it is not new to make use of a rubber cushion in spring-beds, as such has been done by securing the rubber between two slotted corrugated plates, and securing the said plates to a movable bed -bottom in such positions that the rubber cushions will act as a buffer between the bed-bottom and the side and end rails of the bedstead, and I do not therefore claim such constructiombroadly; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
The combination, with the side rails of a bed, of spring-supported rails secured thereto having recesses upon their outer sides, pieces of elastic material secured in said recesses and projecting therefrom, and the slats resting upon said springsupported rails, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT CLAYTON YOUNG.

G. Y. ERGEMBRIGHT, J. B. YOUNG.
