Description
UNITED STATES.,
PATENT OEEICE. t
JOHN B. NORTON, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,657, dated March 28, 1882.`
Application tiled January 2B, 1882. (No model.) l
To all whom 'it mayconcern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. NORTON, of Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciication.`
Figure 1 isa plan view of my improved bedbottom, and Figs. 2 to 9 represent details of its component parts detached from each other and from the bed-frame.
My invention has relation to elastic or spring bed-bottoins; audit consists in thecombinatiou and arrangement of spiral and other springs with disks or plates of wood, metal, cr other suitable material, in the manner` hereinafter more fully described and claimed. A
The letter I designates the frame of my improved spring bedbottom, into the top of which staples G, or equivalent fastening devices, are l Hooks placed equidistaut from one another. F are hooked into these staples and connect with elliptic sprin gs A 5` or, it' desired, rhombie springs, as shown at B', or circular springs, as shown at H, may take the place of the elliptic springs. These springs A are connected side-4 Wise by hooked wires or double books E and endwise by donblehooked spiral springs D.
4Rhombic plates 0, made of Wood, metal, or
other suitable material, alternate with the dat springs, and are connected to each other and to their alternating springs in` like mannerviz.,sidewise bythe hooked conneetingor coupling wires E and endwise bythe hooked spiral springs D.' i
The rhombic plates O may be arranged in rows alternating with rows of the springs, or they may be arranged alternately with the springs, according to the degree of flexibility or elasticity the bed is to have. As the plates and their connecting-springs, it will be seen, are detachable from each other, the arrangement of the plates can readily be varied, it being the intention to furnish a suficient nurnber of these plates with each bed-bottom to enable the purchaser to varyor change lthe relative arrangement ot' thesprings and plates in any Iuanner which he maydeem desirable.
It is obvious that my improvement is not limited in its application to bed-bottoms, but .may be used in the construction of chair-bottoms, carriage-seats, settees, and for other like purposes.l
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a spring bed-bottom, of 6o JOHN BROWN NORTON.
