Description

(No ModeL) A. POHL & A. ULAES TABLE LEAF SUPPORT. No. 331,084. PatentedNov. 24, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
ALOIS POHL AND AUGUST CLAES, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TABLE-LEAF SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,084:, dated November 24, 1885.
Application filed January 26, 1885. Serial No. 154,047. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALoIs POHL and-AU- GUST OLAES, both of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Looking Table-Leaf Supports, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and inwhich- Figure 1 is a section of part of a table and leaf with our improvement applied, the leaf being shown in its raised position. Fig. 2 is a bottom or under view of same. Fig. 3 is a front view of same. Fig. at is a similar view to Fig. 1, with the leaf in its lower position.
Our invention relates to means for locking table-leaf supports, and particularly to those supports in which a bar formed with a notch at one end and hinged to the leaf at the other end is employed, said notched portion passing through a slotted piece to lower said leaf, or engaging said piece or a latch on the latter at the entrance to said slot to support said leaf.
Our improved locking device consists of a weighted block supported on said bar to hold it down, and adapted to be raised to permit said bar to be disengaged from said piece, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, A represents part of atable, and B part of-a leaf hinged thereto.
0 represents an arm or bar pivoted to the leaf by means of a plate, D, the plate having recesses D, in which projections or pins 0 on the outer end of the arm fit. The lower end of the arm fits in a slot, 1, of the vertical strip I of the table. The arm has a notch, J, on its under edge, near its lower end, that fits against the lower edgeof the slot (see Fig. 1) when the leaf is in its upper or raised position, the slot being protected where the arm bears against it by a metal plate, L.
N represents a weighted block or slide supported on and fitting over the :arm, and provided with a tongue, N, that enters the slot 1 above the arm when the leaf is raised (see Fig. 1) and holds the arm down and its notch in contact with the lower edge of the slot, thereby forming a rigid support to the leaf.
When the leaf is raised, the slide moves to the position just described automatically. When it is desired to lower the leaf, it is only necessary to pull up on the slide and slightly raise the lower end of the arm, and the leaf will be at liberty to fall, the arm entering the slot I, as shown in Fig. 4..
We claim as our invention The combination, with a table having a leaf hinged thereto, a slotted piece, and a notched arm or bar hinged to said leaf, and by which the latter is supported on said piece, of the weighted sliding block N, supported on said arm or bar, and having a tongue, N, ocoupying the space in said slot above said arm for locking the latter to its seat, substantially as set forth.
ALOIS POHL. AUGUST OLAES.
