D. B. MURRAY.
BUGGY SEAT.
No. 375,888. Patented Jan. 3, 1888.
it EEEES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL B. MURRAY, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
BUGGY-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,888, dated January 3, 1888.
Application filed January 31, I887. Serial No. 226,023. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIED B. MURRAY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage and Buggy Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to removable lazybacks and drop-backs for carriage and buggy seats; and its object is to provide a means for securing the removable parts to the skeleton of the seat-back by a cheap. durable, and readily-operated device, which is self-fastening and is entirely concealed by the upholstery, applicable more particularly to the lazy-back and drop-back described in the specification filed by me April 22, 1886, and allowed December22, 1886, but not yet issued. I accomplish this object by the mechanism hereinafter described, and illustrated in the drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a front side view of the removableback-frame B to carry the upholstery or trimmings with my present invention a in place thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the seat skeleton back A, showing the metal facing 1); and Fig. 3 is a vertical side View of a in place upon transverse sections upon the line of the edge of a of B and A in contact.
The parts 13 and A are of my former invention, above mentioned, a and b, as an improvement thereon, being solely the object of my present application.
Upon the front side of B, preferably at or near the horizontal center, I place vertically the spring a, whichis a fiat rectangular strip of spring metal attached at one end to the side and near the upper edge of B by means of screws being embedded into B its thickness, so that B presents an even surface and terminating at its lower end in a head or enlargement upon the inner side, with an upper shoulder and rounded or beveled from the shoulder to the springs lower end. The. shoulder of a is exactly on a plane with the lower cdgeof A when all parts are in place, so that when the detached part B, covered with the upholstery concealing a is being returned to place, a is sprung outward by the contact of the beveled or rounded side of its head'with the side of A, and when B is down to place the shoulder, resembling a notch cut into the side of a, catches upon the under edge of A, effecting a lock between the parts.
To separate B and A, a is sprung forward by pressure upon its head. The surface ofA is protected from wear by the strip of metal b, embedded therein and secured thereto at the proper place.
As stated, I place this spring at or near the horizontal center of B; but, if desired for any reason, it may be placed elsewhere and more than one spring may be used.
I am well aware that means for attaching removable drop-backs by escutcheons upon the rear of the seat-back and otherwise have been used; but I am not aware thata vertical spring, as above described and placed, was ever known or used prior to my invention thereof.
\Vhat I claim is- In carriage and buggy seutsliaving reinovable upholstery, a vertical spring attached at one end to the side of a removable skeleton back and therefrom extending downward, terminating at its lower end in a head formed by a notch or shoulder in its side, suitable to catch over the lower edge of the permanentrail or .bar of a skeleton back, locking the re movable back to the permanent rail or bar, substantially as described, and for Lhcpurpose expressed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL B. MURRAY. Witnesses:
JOHN A. LADD, EMMA LADD.
