Be it known that I, JAMES DRAIN, a subject have invented certain new and useful Improve- :ments in Filing-Gases; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make. and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in card-index filing-cases; and it consists .in' certain features of novelty relating thereto,all as hereinafter more fully described,

and specifically pointed out in the claims.

The object of the invention is to provide simple, convenient, and durable means whereby cards, such as account-cards, maybe held in proper position in the receptacle and includes means for'holding and locking the cards when desired to make entries thereupon in the course of business.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar .numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a filing-ease equipped with my in- .vention with the cover in position. approximately a longitudinal vertical sectional Fig. 2 is view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the cards which it is intended to usewith the filingcase; and Fig. 4 is a detached detail view showing one corner of the filing-case with locking means thereon, as hereinafter more fully described.

Referring to the parts, 5 indicates generally a filing-case which may be of any desired size, shape, or material, but which is preferably of sufiicient length to contain a considerable number of cards, such as are shown in Fig. 3, which cards are arranged alphabetically in said case. Secured to one edge of the case is an angle-bar 6, L-shaped in cross-section, which angle-bar is rigidly secured in position by means of pins or other securing means passed through the vertical leg of said member 6 and into the side wall 7 of the case. An angle member 8 is pivotally supported upon the wall 9 of the case by means of the pintle 10, which passes through the loop or eyelet 11, and the opposite end of said member 8 is provided with a pintle member 12, which is connected at 13 to the member 8 and passesthrough the staple or loop 14, which serves as a supporting means for that end of the angle member 8. The pintle member 12 is elongated, as shown in Figs. 1 and 1, and provided with the rectangular bend 15, which terminates in the loop 16, which serves as a handle for manipulating the members 12. .15. Said member 17, which may be a loop, staple, or any suitable projection, serves as a stop for the angular portion 15, whereby the angle-bar 8 is held against excessive movement in 1ts pintle-bearing, while the beveled member 18 serves as a catch down locking the angle member 8 in closed position. Slidable upon the upper edges of the said walls 7 and 9 is a cover-section 19, which may be of sufficient length to cover the entire box or not, as may be desired. Rising from the cover-sectlon 19 1s a cross-bar 20, which .1s placed on its edge, as shown 1n Figs. 1 and 2, and extending from said cross-bar obliquely downwardly to the cover 19 is a restplate 21, upon which the cards 22 (shown in Fig. 3) may be placed. Secured in convenient proximity to the rest-plate 21 is a springclip 23, which is supported by the cover-section 19 and by reason of the loop 24 is adapted to bear against the rest-plate 21, so that cards, as 22, may be locked upon said restplate by means of said clip 23. The clip 23 is provided with a handle-loop 25, by means of which said member 23 may be manipulated.

It will be evident that the tabs 22 serve a useful purpose in conjunction with the horizontal flanges of 6 and 8, and the width of the cards is such that the tabs 22 strike such flanges in raising the cards from the case 9 to slide them upon the rest-plate 21. Hence the member 8 need never be unlocked except when cards are placed in the ease or removed therefrom.

When it is desired to use the rest-plate and clip as a securing means for a card, it is preferred that the member 8 shall be thrown to the position indicated in Fig. 4-that is, to a position wherein the horizontal flange 8 will be freed from engagement with the cover-section 19in which case the tabs 22 may be placed, respectively, under the horizontal flange of the angle-bar 6 and under the horizontal flange 8 of the angle member 8, and when the angle member 8 is thrown to the position shown in Fig. 1 the horizontal flanges thereof will impinge the tabs 22, and thereby assist in looking the cards in position.

It will be evident that any card system may be used with the present device, whether provided with the laterally-projecting tabs 22 or not; but said tabs are convenient for various purposes and assist in holding the cards steadily upon the rest-plates while entries are being made thereupon. It is also evident that the device may be used for cards in connection with card systems for any purpose,

1. In a device of the character described, a filing case or receptacle, an angle-bar extending longitudinally thereof at each side. a coversection slidable longitudinally of said filingcase,'an inclinedsupport on said cover-section, and a spring-clip secured to the cover-section, said clip being adapted to bear on said support.

2. In a device of the character described, a filing case or receptacle, an angle member extending longitudinally at one side thereof and fixed in position, an angle member pivotally supported at the opposite side thereof, and means for locking said last-mentioned anglebar in position, in combination with an inclined support on said cover-section, and a springclip secured to the cover-section, said clip being adapted to bear on said support.

3. In a device of the character described, a filing-case, a rigidly-connected angle-bar upon one side thereof, and extending longitudinally of said filing-case with the horizontal flange of said angle-bar elevated above the top edge of said filing-case, a rockableangle-bar sup- 6 ported at the opposite side of said filing-case, means for rocking last-mentioned angle-bar, and means for locking the same in position.

4. In a device of the character described, a filing-case, a fixed angle-bar extending longitudinally thereof with one flange of said anglebar above the top edge of said filing-case, pintle-bearings in convenient proximity to the top edge of the opposite side of said filing-case, a rockable angle-bar supported in said pintlebearings,and means for locking last-mentioned angle-bar in closed position.

5. Ina device of the character described, a filing-case, angle members extending longitudinally thereof with the horizontal flanges of said angle members elevated above the top edge of said filing-case, a slidable cover-section with rest-plate carried by said slidable cover-section, and a locking-clip adapted to bear against said rest-plate.

6. In a device of the character described, a filing-case, a fixedangle-bar extending longitudinally of one side of said "case with its horizontal flange spaced above the top edge of said case, a rockable angle-bar with its horizontal flange spaced above the top edge of said case at the opposite side thereof, pintles on said last mentioned angle-bar, pintle-bearings, an extension integral with one of said pintles, and locking means adapted to cooperate therewith.

7. In a device of the character described, a filing-case, angle-bars extending longitudinally thereof with their horizontal flanges separated from the top edge of "said filing-case, means for rocking one of. said anglebars, means for locking said last-mentioned anglebar in closed position, a slidable cover-section, a rest-plate obliquelydisposed upon said coversection, a supporting-standard for one end of said rest-plate, and a spring-clip adapted to bear against the upper surface of said restplate.
