Be it known that I, lViLLIAM L. VANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at lleveland, in the' county of Cuyahoga and have invented certain new and useful Improivements in Safety Garth Records, of whichlthe following is a speciti' cation. Y

My invention relates to improvements in safety card records or card index recording and il'ng systems of that character in which the cards containing or designed to contain entries are filed within a file case, draweror similar receptaclepand is especially designed and adapted for use in banks or mercantile establishments in place of the tious. The improved file ease or receptacle for receiving and containing the record and index cards may be of any suitable and'convenient form or construction, and in the present embodiment shown in the form of a filing drawer 1, having a pivotally connected side or lateral wall 2, adapted when in its vertical position and locked as hereinafter described, to act as one, side of the drawer, and when the drawer is withd awn or re moved from the file body or case, adapted to be unlocked or unlatched and to have its upper free edge swung outwardly and laterally therefrom to a substantially horizontal position as shown in l, 2, 6, and 7, in which latter position it acts as a supporting desk or shelf for receiving and supporting one orniore of the improved record or index cards in suitable position for recei'v ing notations thereon.

As a means for locking the cards in both their normal and withdrawn positions, as above explained, a looking or retaining element in the form of a longitudinally extending guide rod 4:, is provided at one side of the case or drawer and near the pivoted edge of the side wall 2, said guide rod, in the present instance, being secured to the rear end of the drawer by means of a bracket 5, and extending through the front of the drawer and provided with a hand knob 6, the rod or locking element 4, being adapted to be locked in position by means of a lock 7, of any suitable and'convenient construction.

As a means for elevating and supporting the rear end of the side 2, when in its open or shelf forming position, the latter is provided near its upper rear corner with a pivotally mounted member 11, of such length as to form a supporting leg or block when the same swings outwardly to a vertical position as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, of the drawings, said block or leg 11, normally filling the opening 11, in the side 2, when the latter is in its vertical position, and as a means for causing the pivotally mounted block or leg 11, to normally retain a closed position when the side 2, is in its'close'd position and the drawer is in use, the'lower side. or edge of the block 11, is provided with a beveled portion 11", adapted to engage or interlock with a correspondingly beveled portion of the lower side of the opening 11 and as a means for preventing the inward movement of the free end of the block 11, the free edge of the block is provided with a beveled portion 11, adapted to engage with the correspondingly beveled portion at the end of the opening 11, said block being loosely mounted on the pivoted pin 12, and having some play in the open ing 11, as illustrated most clearly in Figs.- l, 5, and 6,0f the drawings.

The lower rear edge of the side 2, is supported in its open or shelf-"forming positionv by means of ablock or extension 13, at the adjacent rear corner of the drawer and over which the side is adapted to open, as illustrated most clearly in"Figs. 6 and? of the drawings, the slotted pivoted connection provided by the guide slot 9, and guide pin 9, providing for the above movements and adjustments of the rear end of the side 2, when opening and closing in an obvious manner. I

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.

Having thus described one of the embodimerits of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-

1. in a safety card record, a plurality of cards provided with horizontally slotted reinforced base portions terminating in vertical slot extensions.

2. in a safety card record, a card Provided with a horizontally extending ,quide slot at its base, said slot being provided with a looped extension at one side and a right angled extension at the other.

In a safety card record, a filing drawer, a side wall pivotally connected thereto by means of guide pins and slots at its base ends, means for locking said side wall in its closed or Vertical position, and means for supporting the same in an' inclined open horizontal position.

4. in a safety card record, a filing drawer provided with a pivoted side and a card reraining rod in close prdximity to said pivoted side, and a plurality of cards mounted on said guide rod by means of horizontally extending: guide slots terminating in slot extensions at opposite sides of said cards.

6. A safety card record, comprising a fil'e case provided with a pivotally connected side wall, means for supporting the latter in its clos d and open positions, a card retainino; guide rod, and a plurality of cards provided with guide slot base portions operable on said guide rod whereby said cards may withdrawn and laid down upon said pivoted side wall when open to receive notations 1. A safety card record, comprisinga fildrawer provided with a side pivotally connected near its bottom, n'icans for supporting said side in vertical and shelf forming positions, a card retaining rod mounted in said filing drawer near the pivoted portion of said side, and a plurality of cards each provided with a slotted base portion operable on said guide rod whereby the card may be withdrawn and laid down upon said side when the latter is in its horizontal position.

8. A safety card record. comprising a iiling' drawer provided with a side pivotally connected near the bottom oi said drawer, means for supporting said side in its vertical or closed position and in its open or shelf "Forming position, a. card retaining guide rod removably mounted in said tiling drawer parallel with and in close proximity to the pivoted portion of said side wall, and a plurality of cards provided with horizontally slotted base portions operable on said guide rod and provided with looped cxiensionswhereby the same maybe withdrawn and laid down upon said pivoted side wall when in its open position.

9. A safety card record, comprising a filing drawer provided with a side wall pivotally mounted near one edge, means for locking: the latter in its vertical or closed position, a card retaining guidev rod arranged within said drawer in proximity to the pivoted edge of said side wall. and a plurality of cards mounted on said ,Quidc rod and provided with slotted base portions whereby said cards may be withdrawn from said filing drawer in a substantially horizontal direction above said side wall when in open position and rested upon the latter though retained by said guide rod.
