Description

NTTE
GEO. A. MEAOHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent'No. 33,046, dated August 13, 1861.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE A. MEAGHAM, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Button; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the back and Figs. 3 and 4l. sections having different modes of construction.
Similar letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a face button, such as is comA inonly used for coats, with a perforated inetallic eye capable of revolving` relatively to the body of the button, and so formed that it may be sewed to the garment in the same manner as an ordinary cloth eyed button, whereby I am enabled to form a very simple and cheap face button having all the advantages due to a loose or revolving eye, or fastening' as set forth in 'my Patent No. 26776, dated January 10th, 1860.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention will proceed to describe its construction and operation by the aid of the drawings.
The face plate A with its cloth or other covering a, .is made the same as in ordinary buttons. The back plate B is also similar to that used in ordinary cloth eyed buttons, except that a flange b is raised around the edge of the hole for the eye. The eye O is struck up, out of sheet metal into a semispherical form, or approaching that form, with perforations as represented through which to pass the needle in sewing the button to the garment. This edge of C is turned over to embrace the flange on B to hold it in place, but so as to allow of B and C being readily rotated relatively to each other, and thetpacking D is hollowed out sufliciently to allow such motion.
ln striking up the part C the portions between the perforations may be rounded in the form shown in Fig. 1, so as the better to fit the thread and prevent the corners from cutting it. There is less liability in my improved button of cutting the thread than if the piece C was fast to the button, as no twisting strain can be exerted upon the fastening owing to the fact that the button turns freely upon C.
Figs. 3 and 4l show other forms of conneet-ing the parts C and B to avoid the necessity of recessing the packing D. The peculiarity of each is plainly shown in the figures. The way in which the edge of the hole in B is turned in Fig. l, tends to prevent the edge of B from abraiding the thread used for fastening C to the garment, when the button is rotated. Any number or form of perforations may be employed in C; but the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is believed to be preferable.
Having now fully described my invention, what l claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A face button having a perforated revolving metallic eye constructed substantially in the manner herein described.
ln testimony whereof l have hereunto set my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. A. MEACHAM.
