IMPROVEMENT IN CORSET-SPRINGS.

Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 180,763, dated August 8, 1876; application filed January 26, 1876.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THEODORE M. HASS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset-Clasps and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in corset-clasps made of wire.

The nature and character of my invention are, to a certain extent, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the several figures, 1, 2, and 3, represent different forms of construction, and which are susceptible of still further modifications.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

In the following specification will be more fully described the nature and object of my invention, which consists, in part, in constructing the wire braces A separate from the fastenings B, and also in having said, braces formed with double parallel wires, which are joined at the points a, Where the hooks and eyes or fastenings B are attached, substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or the braces A may be formed of double zigzag wires, as shown and indicated in Fig. 3. The former, however, I consider preferable for obvious reasons, which will be duly set forth.

Heretofore, wire corset braces and clasps have been composed of a single Wire, forming both a brace and hook or' eye, and bent in a zigzag form and highly tempered. These clasps are open to several serious objections,

namely: first, the brace itself is entirely too flexible, unless made from wire disproportionately large; second, the wire being tempered, the hooks and eyes-forming integral parts of the bracesare very liable to break, especially the former, during the process of construction, and when so broken the whole brace must be thrown away, as it cannot be repaired; third, the convex corners of the braces in a very short time wear holes through the fabric, in consequence of the almost continual friction which their peculiar form occasions; fourth, in order to prevent the wire from rusting it is necessary to japan or, what is better, nickel-plate them, and in the latter case the process of burnishing is rendered very tedious and expensive in consequence of the projecting hooks and eyes.

All these difficulties are overcome by means of my improvements, and the hooks and eyes, or other fastenings, being made separately, the braces may be tempered, galvanized, and finished before the fastenings are secured thereto, thus reducing the cost of construction, and avoiding loss by breakage, &c.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

A wire corset clasp or brace, A, in combination with fastenings B, when constructed,- combined, and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth and described.-
